Royal Economic Society Elections + Flawed Mechanism Design???...
The RES is now holding annual elections for vital Council Member roles...
Unfortunately there seems to be an obvious and fundamental design flaw with this process, namely, at a preliminary stage, the long list of original candidates is trimmed down and carefully sieved out to produce a shortlist of pre-approved candidates by the existing Council, giving them a simple and perfect way to select in their own image from one election to the next, and to the next, etc, etc.
Game theorist economists call this sort of thing crafty "mechanism design". Econometricians call its effect "hysteresis". Lawyers and judges call it "actual or apparent bias." But whatever label is applied the result is likely to be suboptimal, and to slow the speed of change and development, and also to slow the ability of the Council to reflect current and potential future members and their needs (numerically, predominantly practicing economists, rather than university professors).
I have already raised this with the head of the RES election board, but received no reply. Now I raise the issue more publicly on LI in case of broader interest and concern to other UK economists...

The Royal Economic Society has launched its Council Members Election with votes closing on 28 March 2024 at 23:59 GMT. If you are a member, please cast your vote.
Council members have an important role in the governance of the RES, including setting our strategic direction. They bring valuable perspectives and contributions to our activities and are the voice of our members, so please help the Society by casting your vote. The margin of success in the election is often very small, so every vote matters.
Understand why voting for Council Members is important and how you can vote in the video below.
