The emcee at today's Abilene small business awards luncheon made a telling request of the attendees: "I know it's easy to buy stuff online, but this year stop and think whether there's somebody local you could buy from instead." As an appeal to civic pride, it's fine, but it assumes that Abilene businesses are not also businesses that sell online. Shouldn't they be? If customers want to buy online, let them buy online. The tools are there. The tools are cheap. The search engines will weight toward local results. The customers are already helping by googling for things like "abilene cbd shop". And of course, we, as the local software company, are here to help. Visit our website and book a time, and we'll happily talk to you about how to get your products all e-commerced. So yes, appeal to community solidarity. But then go out and meet your customers where they are.
