"Usefully wrong" When I meet with people and they tell me AI (specifically Copilot) is not working for them, I start with lots of questions, and it is generally one of two things 1) how they are experimenting with it 2) upskilling gaps And those two things go hand-in-hand. When people regularly experiment with AI, and use it as a tool to enhance and augment their own skills, they far surpass even their own expectations of how it can be useful to them. I’m an optimist about AI, but not blind. It’s another tool in the toolbox, not a magic bullet. AI is exploding in popularity and everyone is talking about it, but is it the real deal or is it another hype bubble? According to McKinsey Global Institute estimates generative AI will add almost $2 trillion in annual value to the global economy. It’s no secret that AI is already doing some pretty interesting stuff and the potential use cases will impact almost every industry. But is it really the solution to all our problems? A lot of people I’ve been speaking to are split down the middle, some are all-in with the possibilities, and others are cautious of the potential drawbacks. I fall on the more optimistic side of that spectrum. But, before I go to fanboy on the topic, it’s important to remember AI is just another tool, not the solution to every problem; something that is increasingly overlooked today. AI is a vast topic and there are thousands of different models and approaches to solve different use cases that I don’t have time to cover here. If we look at the most popular models today, they’re Language learning models or LLMs. What does that mean? An LLM is a computer program trained on vast amounts of data to predict the most likely word to follow based on the instructions you give it. Though it may sound convincing it doesn’t guarantee that it’ll give a truthful answer. Something ChatGPT clarifies on their UI. So, it’s great that AI can spit out words we might want to hear at alarming speeds but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s correct or trustworthy. For now, perhaps AI is just trying to please its human overlords. Plus, it still has drawbacks like the training costs, vast amounts of data required and dependency on the quality of inputs. So it’s important to remember the benefits in comparison to these trade-offs - just as you would any tool in your toolbox. No doubt this will get better with time as different models and research papers are released. But expecting a single AI model to be able to solve every problem is a big ask. It’s important to remember the actual problem at hand and the implications of using any tool, be it a hammer or a chainsaw. Where do you stand on AI? #AI is everywhere! The use of it is everywhere... people feel threatened by it like it's an existential threat to the Human Race (Can you hear the terminator movie theme tune?) So unless you are Sarah Conner (in which case run quickly!) then perhaps it's best to try and understand just what this thing is all about. AI was created as a tool for enhancing our (that's us Humans) access to knowledge and enable us to further develop solutions to complex and complicated issues (paraphrasing obviously but do go ahead and do your own research). Speaking of Complicated and Complex... #Complicated is easier than #complex. I've always been fascinated by people trying to say that what they do is complicated. Complicated issues can often be simplified by streamlining processes or breaking them down into manageable parts. Complexity on the other hand is multifaceted and contains both essential components, people and systems, that can actually be complicated. So even if you remove the complicated stuff, complexity can and probably will remain. While AI can certainly streamline complicated tasks, addressing complex issues may require a more nuanced (Human) approach that considers the broader ecosystem. So, what's AI good for? (besides movie plots) Well if you are working on a complicated piece of work, then use AI to help you. If you are working in a complex ecosystem? then by all means use AI but don't expect it to give you the correct answer, it'll just give you more to consider, hence the nuanced approach of understanding the subtleties that AI doesn't understand yet... Like the computer, the server and the cloud - in fact almost every new piece of technology.. everyone freaked out about them stealing jobs (yep, they did that) AI will be doing the same for simplification. So, like I ask all my clients to consider: 1. What employment skills do you bring to any business? 2. How much do you know about AI? 3. When are you learning how to use it to enhance your answer to Q1? AI as a “double-edged sword”? That sounds poetic, doesn’t it? I mean, who wouldn’t want to wield a metaphorical sword that could cut both ways? It’s like having a friend who can either whip up a fantastic meal or serve you burnt toast, depending on their mood. Training AI properly sounds like a no-brainer, but let’s be honest. It feels like handing your toddler a knife and hoping they don’t accidentally carve the dining table instead of their birthday cake. You see, we’re entrusting these sophisticated algorithms with everything from our shopping habits to matters of life and death, and yet, the training process sometimes feels like a game of “guess what this button does.” The irony isn't lost on me—technology designed to enhance our lives, yet it has this uncanny ability to backfire spectacularly. Imagine a world where an AI, after observing our erratic decision-making skills, decides that the best course of action is to eliminate the human factor altogether. Who wouldn't want to live in a dystopian sitcom where machines have taken over, complete with bad punchlines and laugh tracks? As if that’s not enough pressure, the whole concept of being “trained properly” implies some kind of accountability, right? Who’s steering the ship here? The tech wizards claiming to know it all? They’re the same folks who couldn't figure out how to make their own coffee without a step-by-step YouTube tutorial. It’s amusing, really. You hear about all these breakthroughs, and it’s easy to assume we’re on the brink of some utopia. Then, you look at the social media feeds riddled with misinformation and AI-generated chaos, and it’s pretty clear we’re not handing over the keys to our kingdom anytime soon. Picture this: an AI revolution led not by the brilliant masterminds, but by some disgruntled intern who programmed a chatbot after binge-watching sci-fi thrillers. And that chatbot, with all its witty comebacks, operates on a shaky understanding of human emotion. Yeah, that sounds like a recipe for enlightenment. Navigating this digital landscape feels like a reality show where everyone’s trying to outsmart the last contestant, but the prize is just a slightly better Wi-Fi signal. And here we are, stuck in the middle, trying to figure out if we should even trust our own creations when they can’t decide whether cats or dogs are cuter. I suppose the real challenge isn’t
