Leaders are always looking for "Can-do" people to hire and work with. These people are excellent at going above and beyond when the work is difficult. We love them! But what happens when things look impossible? We need to adopt a new way of looking at things. When things look impossible, we need to adopt a mindset of "Can-if." What does that look like? Well, it's the opposite of "can't-because". So instead of saying, "I can't go to work today because my car won't start," we say, "I CAN go to work today, IF I catch the bus." Or, instead of saying, “I can’t take on this new project because I am too busy already,” we can say, “I CAN take on this new project, IF I reprioritize my current workload.” Obviously, these are simple situations, but this way of thinking can bring genuinely innovative results when put to a more rigorous test. Of all the Topics I've covered, this one might be the most difficult... It's felt so deeply in workplaces everywhere. 𝗠𝗶𝗰𝗿𝗼𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘅! It’s not just a frustration. It’s a barrier to growth. For those who lead. And for those who are led. Of all the topics I've covered, this one stands out. Because it holds 𝙥𝙖𝙞𝙣 for so many. Both the one who micromanages. And the one who’s micromanaged. I wanted to tell this story differently. From both perspectives. To help each side reflect. To understand what fuels this cycle. To uncover the root cause. 𝗙𝗲𝗮𝗿. Fear of losing control. Fear of mistakes. Fear of trust being misplaced. But true leadership isn’t about holding tighter. It’s about knowing when to let go. When to create space. When to empower. Bravery lies in loosening the grip. In giving room to others. In facing that fear and stepping aside. How much of your self-worth is tied to your job title and achievements? Confession: My job once controlled my happiness, leaving me blaming or lashing out at the wrong people. But over the past few years, it's become clear to me that when we anchor our self-worth to external accolades like titles and outcomes, we set ourselves up for a never-ending chase where 'enough' is always out of reach. Harsh truths: Maybe it's you, not them. Connecting your self-worth to a title or outcome doesn't just mess with your head—it impacts everyone around you, especially in leadership roles. Here's how: 👉🏿 Increased Stress and Burnout. The relentless pursuit of external validation is a one-way ticket to stress, exhaustion, and burnout. 👉🏿 Micromanagement: Leaders who tie their self-worth to outcomes may micromanage their teams to ensure success, stifling creativity and autonomy. 👉🏿 Lack of Empathy: Focusing solely on results can prevent leaders from overlooking their team members' personal and professional needs. (This used to be me; I'm better now -:). Empathy gets tossed out the window. 👉🏿 Unethical Practices: The pressure to achieve can sometimes lead to unethical behavior, compromising integrity and trust with colleagues, clients, etc. What would you add to this list?
