I’ve been a part of hundreds of NPD and innovation sprints throughout my career...and it seems to never fail that a CPG industry colleague asks me about my personal flavor preference. If they knew my favorite childhood pop growing up was Squirt or that I probably ate my weight in orange and lemon Starburst...it would be a silly question to ask! Even as an adult kid…my go-to powdered supplements, hydration beverages, or energy drinks usually center around citrus flavors. I’m mentioning all this because you’d think, a citrus lover like me, that I would be acutely aware of Matt McLean and his company Uncle Matt's Organic. But with the decadelong massive proliferation of products/brands across the different functional CPG categories that I deeply analyze…it unfortunately creates blind spots. Years ago, while working with Perfect Earth Foods, Hilltribe Organics, and Maprao organic coconut water, all under the Urmatt Ltd. Group of companies, we rolled out more than 20 SKUs that hit the market (though plenty didn’t make the cut—the bittersweet fun of developing products). Today, I picked up a few packs of these from Villa Market JP Co., Ltd. and it took me right back to the first taste tests we did for them. I remember how everyone in the office had wildly different opinions about which version of this flavor was the best—and why. Those stalemates were tough on the R&D team, but they often led to breakthroughs that were the spark that spun "good" into "great." Funny how grabbing a pack of Thailand's first organic, MSG-free instant noodles today served as a nice reminder: in some aspects of life, a stalemate isn’t always like it is in something like chess (a dead end). Instead, it can be the perfect opportunity to create a spark to get innovative and think outside the box. 🔥 #innovation #productdevelopment #RD

This is Marc Coloma's unexpected lesson while setting up Heura Foods. And it is funny because it is true... Marc shares that something he realized during his journey is the amazing distance that it exists between scientific knowledge and consumer knowledge. It is like there is a wall between the people working in the food industry and the people who are not interested at all. And probably this does not only happen with food, but with practically anything.
