Exposure to what you're not comfortable with ultimately makes your life richer. I was comparing notes with a leadership student of mine about traveling, and we found it fascinating how people in different countries do things differently. For instance, in Europe, tipping isn't as customary as it is here in the US. But it's not just about the customs. What blew my mind even more were stories of fellow Americans who travel abroad only to order the same American food they eat at home. Seriously, what's the point of stepping out of your comfort zone if you refuse to embrace new experiences? Even my own sister once broke up with a boyfriend because he wasn't willing to try anything new. Talk about a narrow palate! As we delved deeper into our discussion, it became clear that embracing differences—whether cultural, culinary, or otherwise—always enriches our lives. 6 years ago I embarked on a solo trip to Italy that changed my life. I spent 10 days traveling from Rome to Positano on my own. It was my first time ever doing a solo trip (besides a day alone exploring Barcelona after a business trip), and it was exhilarating! The idea of traveling alone felt scary and overwhelming to me at first, but I decided to take a leap of faith, and once the plane landed in Rome, those feelings were replaced with excitement and gratitude. Full days completely free to go where I wanted, do what I wanted, eat what I wanted - what a gift! Everyone should experience this at least once in their life. I learned a lot about myself on that trip - my curiosity about other cultures and the world, my independence, my resilience, my resourcefulness, my craving for adventure. I think a lot of what I learned helped me grow in my career in many ways - become a better teammate, leader, creative marketer, flexible and open minded person, and the list goes on. Here are some things solo travel taught me: ✈ This is YOUR life. Be selfish in the pursuit of what brings YOU joy, not others. ✈ Book the trip, quit the job, make the move, do the thing you want to do. ✈ Say yes to new experiences and opportunities. You never know where they will lead you. ✈ The unknown is scary, but what’s on the other side of it is beautiful. ✈ You can do ANYTHING you put your mind to. ✈ There's a whole world outside your door, your street, your town, your country. Go see it. ✈ You have the ability to be incredibly independent - all you need is to believe in yourself. ✈ The more you travel, the more types of people you'll meet. Learn from them. ✈ Dolce far niente (the sweetness of doing nothing) is something American workers should really adopt from Italians. We work hard here, we burn out, we need to prioritize balance in our lives in order to give our best selves to both our careers and personal lives. The moral of the story is travel alone at least once in your life. The clarity and strength that comes from it is priceless. So, what are you waiting for? Book your trip.
