What goes into building a large web project or application? I searched the web for a comprehensive flow chart years ago and never came up with anything, so I built this one for my agency JHMG (jhmediagroup.com). A flow chart like this can branch in multiple different ways, but this is a solid overview of what the flow looks like. Also, a SaaS, application, or digital project doesn't just stop when it's done. It keeps improving, adding, changing, and growing to meet customer needs. If you want to learn more about building complex SaaS and application projects, jump on my weekly email here: https://lnkd.in/gPZW7Pqa Here's the general flow of how it goes: - Stakeholders meet and decide on what is required for the project and define success for the project - In this case, since it's for an agency, either an initial engagement is established to define the project scope or if it is a more simple project the estimate is created and sent to the client or stakeholders - After the scoping engagement and/or after a scope of work is created, there is an project team kickoff meeting and a full stakeholders team kickoff meeting. - Content is aggregated and/or created in parallel with some aspects of design work. IMPORTANT: This is where a lot of companies mess up. They want to do design before they have content because they don't realize that design conveys content, not the other way around. You need to have content before you start designing pages. - After you have iterated on design and presented different views to stakeholders and received feedback and approval, then you can begin development work. There is always some development work that can be done ahead of time as well. - Now it's time to run a QA process (good teams should be doing this throughout as well) and prep a release candidate. - After final approval is given, it's launch time. - Now the project goes into a Continuous Integration & Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) phase as well as a Continuous Marketing & Analysis phase where changes are made based on user feedback, product owner direction, and analysis based on what's working in the market. - With all this data, you can now analyze the project for success metrics. There's a lot that what's in this spreadsheet to building great projects, but this is a solid starting point. 💡 Why Software Estimates Are a Delusion 💡 For over six decades, the software industry has clung to the hope that we can accurately estimate how long it takes to build something new. Yet, as David Heinemeier Hansson points out, this approach has consistently failed – and for good reason. In software development, the only work that's truly "estimable" is the routine kind, which often turns into a product or service you can buy off the shelf, like WordPress or Shopify. But when it comes to novel work – the kind that drives innovation – accurate estimates are virtually impossible. Why? Because you can’t fully understand a problem until you start solving it. The process of building software is inherently iterative. It’s filled with unexpected challenges, changing requirements, and the need to pivot. So why do we keep trying to estimate what we can’t predict? It's time to rethink our approach. In reality, we face three critical variables: budget, time, and scope. In custom software projects, you simply can’t lock down all three. But you can fix your budget and deadline, allowing scope to adjust as needed. This approach, where features are sacrificed when necessary, helps keep projects on track and ensures quality outcomes. Here’s how you can make it work: 1. Break Large Projects into Short Iterations: Small, manageable steps allow for quicker adjustments and keep progress visible. 2. Work Directly with Decision-Makers: Close collaboration with those who have the power to make decisions ensures alignment and reduces delays. 3. Quality Over Quantity: It’s better to perfect a few features than to spread resources too thin and deliver many incomplete ones. By focusing on what really matters – delivering high-quality software on time and within budget – we can stop wasting energy on futile estimates and start delivering real value. It’s not about trying harder. It’s about working smarter.
