Excellent summary of global state of affairs in ocean freight and logistics. We live in a very changing world with half the world’s population about to select new governments in the coming period.
At the 2024 Annual General Meeting of A.P. Moller - Maersk, I had the opportunity to outline how the recent macro and geopolitical developments impact global trade, the importance of regulators’ support to bridge the cost of green and black fuels, and the status of the company’s strategic journey 👉🏻 https://lnkd.in/dhJfjVuc #alltheway #greensupplychain #maersk #geopolitics

Today we organised an excursion to the Port of Rotterdam. The excursion included a tour through the Port by bus, a boat ride in the Port (Maasvlakte 2) and a visit to the APM container terminal. Explanations and a presentation by professional guides were included. It was THE opportunity to see in practice what is lectured during the lectures and to visit Europe's largest Port! Registrations poured in and there was even a waiting list. In the end we went out with 94 students and 4 lecturers Leon de Veld Nilesh Anand Arthur Fellinger Pieter Romer. #LetsChangeTheFaceOfBusiness #RotterdamBusinessSchool #HogeschoolRotterdam #Sustainability #MasterInInternationalSupplyChainManagement #MSCImpact #supplychains #supplychain #supplychainmanagement #supplychainsolutions

MSC has announced a slot-sharing agreement with Ocean Network Express (ONE), HMM, and Yang Ming Marine Transportation on the Asia-Europe trade routes. This collaboration will cover nine services, starting in February 2025, when current alliance structures dissolve. The agreement marks a strategic move for MSC after the end of its 2M alliance with Maersk, while ONE, HMM, and Yang Ming will transition from the THE Alliance into a new arrangement called the Premier Alliance, which will run for an initial five years. The shift reflects broader changes in the global shipping landscape as carriers realign their partnerships to enhance flexibility and efficiency. MSC's choice to remain largely independent, combined with its slot-sharing arrangement, highlights its intention to maintain strong connections on key routes while avoiding the constraints of traditional alliances. If you're interested in understanding how these alliance changes could affect your shipping plans, feel free to reach out to us for more information. Congratulations to the International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH) and chainPORT on the release of the study “#Port #Call #Optimisation through #Data #Quality” at the #IAPH #World #Ports #Conference in #Hamburg! This study marks a milestone in driving maritime efficiency and decarbonisation by improving data quality in port call processes. Terminal Industry Committee 4.0 - TIC4.0 is proud to have contributed to this collaborative effort, bringing together insights and expertise from across the maritime supply chain to implement Just-in-Time Arrival best practices. The findings of this report will help shaping the future of port call synchronization, and we look forward to continuing our collaboration with IAPH, ChainPORT, IPCSA - International Port Community Systems Association, Digital Container Shipping Association (DCSA), Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), Portbase and DAKOSY to further enhance sustainability, operational efficiency, and digital transformation in the port-maritime industry. Let’s keep the momentum going! 🚢📊💡 Dr. Phanthian Zuesongdham, Patrick Verhoeven, Pascal Ollivier, Ingrid Boqué Sastre, Norbert K., Gadi Benmoshe, Paul RN Walter, Javier Gallardo #MaritimeInnovation #PortCallOptimisation #JustInTime #DataQuality #SupplyChainResilience #Sustainability #Decarbonisation #PortDigitalisation

This will be interesting to watch given the changes in alliances and MSC going in a separate direction. Now might be a prudent time for importers to review their ocean freight network.
MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company bets on more direct port calls to meet the demand of a growing global economy, says CEO Soren Toft. As such, the world's largest container line moves in the opposite direction of its two peers Hapag-Lloyd AG and A.P. Moller - Maersk, whose new Gemini Cooperation will have fewer direct port calls. "We have decided to do an extensive port coverage because one of the trends that we are seeing is that supply chains are changing. They are no longer as centric," said Toft at the International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH) conference in Hamburg on Tuesday. #shipping #oceanfreight #business #logistics #ports

In my short (5 years) in the shipping and logistics industry, I have been fascinated by the overall low schedule reliability levels and the constant efforts to improve this. Defining schedule reliability as the probability that vessels arrive and depart on time as compared to the schedule published by the carrier, the industry see 55% as high reliability. In this context the announcement of the Maersk planned modular network is particularly exciting with a planned schedule reliability of above 90% that seems like a game-changer. https://lnkd.in/gWXNzXYx

Today I was invited to talk at Maritime Decarbonisation Conference in Amsterdam on how we can move just-in-time concepts (JIT) from planning stages into real world use. At HVCC Hamburg Vessel Coordination Center GmbH (a globally unique joint-venture between HHLA Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG and EUROGATE Group), we coordinated last year 2,700 large ships and 4,600 terminal calls of feeder and barges. The most important tool to inform a carrier about a requested time of arrival (RTA) is the HVCC passage plan, of which we issued 3,800 last year. This early coordination, both geographically and temporally before authorities and pilots take over on the River Elbe, creates enormous efficiency gains in the Port of Hamburg in terms of use of waterways, port- and terminal infrastructure and resource planning of all our partners. Further, all these effects ultimately contribute to sustainability. Logically, we have gained in past years a lot of experiences with the challenges that JIT-concepts, new processes and the necessary digitalization entail. The following five lessons learned (and recommendations) may sound obvious, but I am curious to see the honest results of your self-analysis... 1. JIT requires many stakeholders working together and sharing planning data – better start collaborating today between authorities, carriers, terminals, pilots, service providers as well as start connecting bi-directional with other ports, because you may require their data (e.g. the ETD) to set up a reliable passage to your port. 2. Every port is different with regards to roles and responsibilities, hence, there is no blueprint on how to implement JIT – be sure all stakeholders are clear on who is doing what (today and in future). 3. Start with a detailed analysis of all relevant processes and requirements – and then look for the best digitization roadmap and (ideally) collaborative processes in future. 4. Global carriers do not like adopting port individual definitions of time stamps and interfaces – better engage in International Taskforce Port Call Optimization, Digital Container Shipping Association (DCSA), Terminal Industry Committee 4.0 - TIC4.0 and adopt existing, platform agnostic standards. 5. Go ahead with the first movers - the doubters will follow! Any experiences you would like to share – drop us a massage. #Decarbonisation #JIT #Digitization #Collaboration #MDCEurope2024
