🎙️ Had the pleasure of joining The Rundown podcast by PoliticsHome last week to talk about why (some) MPs are leaving X/Twitter and what this means. We covered a lot of ground: 🔹 The role of social media in shaping the public sphere 🔹 Why platforms like Blue Sky are attracting MPs, and whether they’re just echo chambers 🔹 How algorithms both reflect *and* shape society 💡 These aren’t just tech questions—they’re deeply political and philosophical ones. Who decides what gets seen? Who decides what doesn’t? And what does that mean for our democracies? 🌶️ My spicy take: X is democracy in its purest, crudest form - almost an ancient Greek form of public debate (with warts and all!). ▪️ It's where CHANGE happens - the XL Bully campaign couldn't have happened without X. ▪️ It's where NEWS happens - there is no other place where news is gathered, discussed & shared at the same pace. ▪️ It's the best place for DIVERSITY OF THOUGHT - users can hand-pick their own virtual newspaper in their X feed with the best investigative, opinion, entertainment and breaking news coverage. And most of all what I love about it - you don’t need a university position, think tank or masthead behind you to be influential voice on X. Big thanks to Alain Tolhurst, Josh Simons MP and Zoë Crowther for a fascinating discussion. If you’re interested in the intersection of tech, politics, and democracy, this one’s worth a listen. 📌 Link to the full episode in the comments

🎧NEW PODCAST ALERT: Congressional Action on Regulatory Technology featuring Congresswoman Erin Houchin → https://lnkd.in/gFzWi-PH It’s easy to underestimate the importance of system-building in public policy, but Rep. Erin Houchin's bipartisan FUTURES Act would require financial regulators to self-assess their own tech readiness to oversee the tech transformation underway. #regulation #finance #podcast"

This is an insightful podcast with Steve Gordon, Director of the California Department of Motor Vehicles that speaks to the heart of DMV’s success - how they put the customer’s needs first. I admire what he and his team have accomplished with their customer-centric mindset. 🔎 My favorite takeaway: Gov’t needs to stop thinking in forms, and instead determine what information is needed, and the most direct way to get it - it’s rarely a form. He correctly notes, agencies often already have, or have access to much of the info they ask customers to provide on their forms. #dmv #cadmv #california #insightful #nomoreforms #innovationingovernment #governmentinnovators #customerfocused #podcast

A brilliantly thoughtful podcast!
🎉Today, POPVOX Foundation is announcing “Gavel In,” a limited-run, explainer podcast 🎙️series about how Congress works, created especially for freshmen Members of the 119th Congress, their staff, and spouses. Gavel In supplements the House’s official New Member Orientation so new Members and staff are extra set up for success as they establish their new offices on Capitol Hill and in their districts. 🙌 We interviewed a bipartisan mix of prominent Members of Congress, Capitol Hill Chiefs of Staff and other high-ranking staffers, and Congressional scholars on important topics that every freshman Member of Congress and their managerial staff need to know, including: 📜the legislative process 🙋🏽♀️hiring staff 💰managing the office budget 🏛️Congressional Rules 👨🏻⚖️effective committee membership ⚖️conducting oversight 🤝building rapport across the chamber, and more. Gavel In’s cohosts are POPVOX Foundation’s Director of Government Innovation Aubrey Wilson and Director of Government Capacity Taylor J. Swift — two former House staffers from both sides of the aisle who share insights based on experiences organizing New Member Orientation and Congressional modernization efforts. Throughout the episodes, they intersperse tips on new Congressional technology 🧑💻 and training resources available and emphasize how such recent improvements will benefit the Members Elect and their staff. And most importantly, Gavel In provides empathy 💗 for freshmen Members as they face a steep learning curve📈. From their many years of experience, our hosts and guests share lifehacks and practical tips for adjusting to being a lawmaker, balancing Congressional and family life, and more.
