This article from Columbia Journalism Review is fascinating, and an argument for the importance of a reputation management communication plan. There are volumes authored by PR pros advising against ignoring reporters inquiries, yet this article documents how frequently it happens. Throughout my career, I can count on one hand the number of times I have made a calculated decision not to respond to a media request, and 99.9% of the time it was after multiple engagements with a reporter who repeatedly misrepresented or distorted information (even if not intentionally). I suspect, more often than not, reporters get ghosted because the brand is caught off guard. They haven't planned how they will respond in a reputation crisis. Or haven't socialized the planned response with stakeholders. If the PR team is haggling with executives and lawyers on what to say or how to say it when the reporters' questions start rolling in, the opportunity to frame the narrative is quickly lost. The Wall Street Journal editor Paul Beckett’s account in the Columbia Journalism Review of how the Journal mobilized to free Evan Gershkovich after 16th months as a prisoner in Russia is a tour de force and “a free press triumph” and well worth the read. I've seen quite a few debates on this platform about journalists vs. PR professionals. Recently, I had the chance to chat with some PR colleagues, and we discussed our pain points, common goals, and ways we can collaborate better. Here are a few key takeaways: 🤝💬 1. **Realistic Deadlines** ⏳: PR pros often go through multiple approval cycles before they can send quotes or align calls with the right spokesperson. Giving them at least a week can help.      **Journo pain point**: Not all stories can wait. Some are breaking news or trending, requiring immediate attention.      **Solution**: PRs should stay updated with the news cycle and prepare their clients for potential queries. Phone calls with spokespersons against email interactions could save everyone time! 2. **Irrelevant Queries** 📞📧: Both PRs and journalists face this issue. Journalists get overwhelmed with calls and emails, while PRs sometimes don't keep us updated on their client movements.   **Solution**: PRs should send updated client lists regularly. Journalists can maintain updated profiles on LinkedIn and X (formerly Twitter) to help PRs find them easily. This ensures better, more relevant communication. 3. **Challenging Clients** 🏢: Many spokespeople find talking to the media daunting due to the risk of misinterpretation.   **Journo pain point**: Building sources and getting timely inputs can be tough without direct corporate connections.   **Solution**: PRs should train their clients well and build trust with journalists. Remember, we are trained professionals who value your insights. Trust us to represent you accurately without needing to review drafts or telling other players who are participating in a story. By setting realistic expectations, maintaining clear communication, and building mutual trust, journalists and PR professionals can create a more effective and collaborative working environment. I got some time to read the 2024 Digital News Report from the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, full of data about global news consumption and changes happening in our industry. The topics that resonated most with me revealed sentiments about trust, gaps in coverage and paying for news. 🤝 Trust: You can’t have a healthy democracy without trust in the media. While trust in news has remained stable at 40%, it’s still four points lower than during the height of the pandemic. We’re working every day at TAPinto to provide credible, accurate and objective daily local news for our communities. In many places, we’re the only source for local news. We have a unique responsibility to connect with readers in real life and tell their stories. We get feedback that lets me know we’re on a good path with building trust. One mayor in a town we serve said the work of TAPinto Scotch Plains/Fanwood “fosters a broader sense of community identity and connection, allowing us to understand the diverse perspectives within our own backyard." 👥 Audience: The report also reveals that many publishers may be focusing too much on updating people on top news stories, and not enough on providing different perspectives or reporting stories that offer optimism or solutions.
