We applaud the National Literacy Trust and Jonathan Douglas CBE, Hon FRSL, for launching the visionary “Changing Stories Together” initiative this week. In a transformative and empowering move, initiatives like these instill hope, uniting businesses, educators, governments, and society with a shared focus on universal literacy. This big and bold three-year strategy (2024-2027) brings hope, addressing the evolving literacy challenges of our time. With a focus on technology’s role and the stark realities of child poverty, the Trust is ready to uplift communities and make reading and writing a key part of our country’s growth. The initiative unfolds across three pivotal pillars: Literacy to Grow: Ensuring every child enters school equipped with the foundational language and communication skills. Literacy to Learn: Guiding every young individual to leave school with the literacy tools necessary for life’s journey. Literacy to Thrive: Offering those exiting the criminal justice system a chance at a brighter future through improved literacy. At Storytime, our mission resonates deeply with these goals. We believe in the power of reading to level the playing field, offering every child a universe of possibilities through the stories we craft and share monthly. With over 900 tales in various formats, we try to bridge the gaps technology has created and helping new generations embrace it one story at a time. We’re 100% committed to fostering a lifelong passion for reading that transcends barriers and promotes opportunities for all. 📚 Why Literacy Matters: Breaking Barriers for Marginalized Communities I had the honor of collaborating with two of the founders of #theNashvilleBlackLiteracyCoalition , Tiffeni Fontno, Ed.D. Literacy is a fundamental right for every human being. As 𝐍𝐞𝐥𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐚 wisely said, “𝐄𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐰𝐞𝐚𝐩𝐨𝐧 𝐰𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐡 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝.”🌍 While International Literacy Day was yesterday, its message resonates 𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑦 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑔𝑙𝑒 𝑑𝑎𝑦. Last year over 185,000 children started school without the language, communication and literacy skills they need to thrive. The heartbreaking reality is we are living in a “cost of literacy crisis”. Research published yesterday from Pro Bono Economics, shows that the disadvantage gap in early literacy skills is costing over £800 million every year in England. For hundreds of thousands of children, the lack of communication and literacy skills not only affects their learning, confidence, and wellbeing, but they are also more likely to struggle with their GCSEs and be unemployed by their 30s. Children experiencing poverty are most likely to be affected! This is not a problem that can be solved by any one organisation but the great news is that business leaders and businesses can make an incredible difference. That’s why I’ve signed the National Literacy Trust’s open letter to call on the Government and the business community to commit to putting early language and communication at the heart of national conversation. The #EarlyWordsMatter campaign, which was launched yesterday, will support 250,000 children and families with crucial early literacy skills, in areas worst hit by poverty.
