UK-based Skyports Infrastructure has announced a groundbreaking collaboration with South Korea's leading low-cost airline, Jeju Air, to develop vertiport infrastructure for air taxi operations. This partnership was formalized at a signing ceremony in Gimpo City, Korea, marking a significant step forward in the country's urban air mobility (UAM) sector. The agreement will leverage the combined expertise of Skyports and Jeju Air to build a comprehensive vertiport network. The companies plan to engage with key government, regulatory, and industry stakeholders to identify the requirements, opportunities, and challenges of launching vertiport infrastructure and air taxi services. Yun Yuan Tay, Skyports' Head of the Asia-Pacific region, emphasized the strategic importance of this partnership, stating, “Korea is an important market for the air mobility industry, and since our launch in 2023, we’ve been collaborating extensively with local partners to foster industry growth. Our partnership with Jeju Air brings new expertise and local connections.” The development strategy will focus on major metropolitan areas, including Jeju Island, and will involve thorough due diligence on priority sites to prepare for commercial operations. Additionally, the partnership will explore the commercial viability of air taxi services in Korea, aiming to produce a practical business strategy for the development and operation of advanced air mobility (AAM) infrastructure. Park Tae-ha, Head of Jeju Air’s UAM Business Task Force, highlighted the potential of this collaboration, saying, “Through cooperation with Skyports, we will establish business models tailored to the Korean environment and create a standardized service system ready for the commercial phase of Urban Air Mobility.” Jeju Air currently operates 42 aircraft and serves 47 destinations across Korea, striving to provide comprehensive air mobility services through innovative airline operations and UAM. Archer Aviation Inc. has chosen Falcon Aviation Services as its vertiport infrastructure partner for strategic locations in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Falcon Aviation, a prominent aviation services operator in the UAE, will collaborate with Archer to develop state-of-the-art vertiport infrastructure, starting at Falcon Heliport at Atlantis, the Palm in Dubai, and the Marina Mall heliport in Abu Dhabi’s Corniche. The collaboration aims to facilitate the launch of Archer’s Midnight flying car in the UAE and the MENA region by 2025. The Midnight flying car service will initially operate between the Falcon vertiports, offering passengers a unique and time-efficient travel option, taking as little as 30 minutes from takeoff to landing. The route between Abu Dhabi and Dubai, known for heavy traffic, will be serviced by Archer’s Midnight flying car, providing a rapid and scenic commute over water. This initiative marks a significant step toward urban air mobility in the region, with the UAE poised to become a global leader in this innovative transportation sector. This agreement lays the groundwork for Joby to establish and scale air taxi services in the Emirate, unlocking the potential for inter-emirate services. Joby has applied to become the first certificated air taxi operator in the United Arab Emirates, working towards an Air Operator Certificate from the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA). Great to see Invest Victoria has released its final policy Action Plan on the introduction of Advanced Air Mobility to Victoria, Australia. This new era of clean, green, quiet aviation is almost here. UPLIFTING PROSPECT Inspired application - while passenger versions of electric air taxis progress lengthy certification processes - and in multiple cases urgent scrambles for critical funding - Fiji Airways has just partnered with US-based start-up Odys Aviation for potential deployment of its autonomous freight version, Laila, from as early as next year. With Fiji’s broad spread of 330 islands, many with limited or even no airport infrastructure, remotely-piloted hybrid-powered aircraft offer significant potential for critical cargo deliveries, including in conditions too dangerous for piloted conventional craft.
