𝐓𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐪 𝐅𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐫 10 𝐘𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐁𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐁𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫! Tanishq, now a big name in Indian jewelry, had a rocky start. Launched by Titan in the 1990s under the Tata Group, it struggled for almost a decade to make an impact. At that time, 95% of the jewelry market was controlled by small, family-run jewelers. The brand was born out of India’s 1991 forex crisis. Titan needed foreign currency to import watch parts, so they decided to export jewelry to Europe. This solved their forex problem but didn’t help their jewelry business take off. Initially, Tanishq tried selling 18-carat gold and European-style designs, but Indian customers didn't connect with this. In India, gold is a symbol of wealth and trust, traditionally bought from family jewelers. Without that trust, Tanishq couldn't win over buyers. By 2001, Tanishq was on the verge of collapse. Titan’s stock hit ₹2, and they were losing ₹150 crores. Consultants advised shutting it down. But instead of giving up, Tanishq changed its strategy. They switched to 22-carat gold, meeting Indian expectations of purity. They introduced the “Karatmeter” to test gold purity, revealing that 60% of local gold was impure. The “Impure to Pure” campaign allowed customers to exchange impure gold for certified 22-carat jewelry, building much-needed trust. Today, Tanishq makes up 88% of Titan’s revenue. With over 400 stores across India, it holds 7% of the country’s massive jewelry market. CaratLane - A Tanishq Partnership Reports 18% Increase in Q1 FY25 Total Income, Sees Growth in EBIT Tata-owned omnichannel jewellery startup CaratLane, a Tanishq partnership, has reported a total income of INR 754 Cr for the first quarter (Q1) of the financial year 2024-25 (FY25), marking an 18% increase from INR 639 Cr in the same period last year. Notably, this figure excludes “bullion and digi-gold sales” amounting to INR 139 Cr and INR 4 Cr for the current and previous year’s first quarter, respectively, according to parent company Titan. In its first quarter as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Titan Company, CaratLane achieved an 8.5% year-on-year (YoY) growth in earnings before interest and tax (EBIT), reaching INR 38 Cr in Q1 FY25, up from INR 35 Cr in Q1 FY24. Traditional family jewellers, typically cautious with external financing, are starting to explore options like bank loans and equity investments. Enhanced regulatory frameworks and practices, such as GST and hallmarking, are increasing confidence among banks and investors, making it easier for jewellers to access funding. in a nutshell, I do not think demand for natural diamonds and natural diamond jewellery will recover very soon in China. The major retailers headquartered in Hong Kong with substantial presence in China are all facing substantial headwinds. As yet, I do not believe natural diamonds losses have been gains for LGD as retail demand for LGD in China remains unclear. There seems to be a lot of momentum in India for LGD retail.
