Attribution For Event Spend... A better way It's not just events. All marketing suffers from the attribution fallacy, but here is how it affects events: First off let's explain why everyone is making the same mistake. Software vendors have convinced us they can tell us why people buy. That's why we think we should be able to explain every action having one singular reason for it. But B2B purchases don't work that way. They are influenced by multiple touch points of multiple stakeholders. So we need to move away from this obsession with single point attribution. Now let's look at events. We know people crave them. We know they touch multiple stages of the buyer journey. We know they move they can move the needle. But we can't expect each event to move the needle the same way for every buyer in every stage of the buying journey. We just need find a better way to understand how the needle is moved. Let's simplify it. I suggest we start with a tag that simply attaches to all event interactions. I don't believe we are looking for an exact lead source. We are looking to understand the customer journey and the impacts an event or events have. What are the catalysts to customers buying, increasing spend or their pipeline deal accelerating. Lets not argue over leads or argue over attribution, but rather understand the journey and which parts, such as an event, can contribute or accelerate commerce. Find the trends.

Screen scrolling alone doesn't cut it. Culturally. Events are the key beneficiary of a sustained upturn in total marketing spend (Bellwether report from the IPA). Category of ‘events’ saw budget expansion in Q1 2024 of +23.1% from a previous +15.9% in Q4 2023. In-person events (60%), video (59%), thought leadership (57%) and digital events (49%) are the top channels B2B marketing leaders are looking to leverage this year. Why? Brand awareness and new business, of course. How to prove ROI on brand awareness from events? - 🤷♂️ How to predict and budget for the amount of new leads? - 🤷♂️ The headlines are positive, and the argumentation is definitely on point. In-person events is extremely powerful tool to build new connections, and to strengthen existing ones.
