Benue State University to establish Faculty of Agriculture The Executive Governor of Benue State, Rev. Hyacinth Alia has approved the establishment of Faculty of Agriculture for Benue State University, to compliment the Centre for Food Technology and Research (BSU- CEFTER), which was established 10 years ago. The Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof Moses Iorpuu made this known during the 10th anniversary of the centre. The BSU-CEFTER is a project funded by the World Bank to address post harvest management issues and offer post graduate education. The BSU-CEFTER is a centre of excellence in Africa for the control of post harvest losses and food security. According to the vice chancellor, when established, the faculty will assist BSU-CEFTER in it’s food technology innovation, which currently has six mini factories with capacity to produce quality cassava flour products, tomato paste and fabricate food processing equipment. Iorpuu added that the faculty which would offer more admission spaces for aspiring undergraduates, and act as entrepreneurship skills acquisition centre. He said that offering agriculture and farming as major discipline, will help students to understand food production and management. “This knowledge adds to student’s exposure and helps them better understand the seasonality of crops, harvesting and transportation.” He added that when established, the faculty will offer insights into the roles of agriculture in supporting livelihoods through food, habitat, and jobs, provision of raw materials, and in building strong economies. “Agriculture can help reduce poverty, raise incomes and improve food security for 80% of the world’s poor, who live in rural areas and work mainly in farming,” he added The vice chancellor acknowledged the contributions of former leaders of the university, which paved the way for the project to succeed, adding that the university would sustain the centre even after the rounding up the world bank funded project. Iorapuu reaffirmed the university’s commitment to excellence in offering qualitative education, research, and innovation. He said that over 30 international students from 10 West and Central African countries have enrolled for postgraduate studies in BSU-CEFTER, assuring that the centre will continue to partner other institutions to ensure food security in Nigeria and in the African continent. In his remarks, the Centre Leader of BSU-CEFTER, Prof Barnabas Ikyo, expressed commitment to providing sustainable practices to enhance economic development and food security. He disclosed that CEFTER Foods Nigeria Ltd, a subsidiary, of the centre, has generated over $1 million in revenue over the past decade. ” Agrobiodiversity is in rapid decline, due to the intensification of agriculture and the development of food value chains based on industrial processing techniques. However, consumers are not generally involved in developing solutions to reverse this trend and their relation to agrobiodiversity remains largely unknown. As part of a European project, and with the aim of involving consumers in guiding research, innovation and policies, a large online survey (n = 2397) and focus groups (n = 82) were carried out in seven countries to gather consumers’ preferences and aversions regarding the use of agrobiodiversity in food chains in relation to their environmental concerns, food consumption practices and knowledge. Using the majority judgment approach typically used to improve political votes, different options for using of agrobiodiversity in food chains were proposed to citizen-consumers. Results first showed that the decline of agrobiodiversity is a concern for consumers, but does not guide food schoices. Then, the alternative options for using agrobiodiversity in food chains, previously documented as favourable to its conservation and development, received positive votes from a large majority of respondents, regardless of their socio-economic category. However, the research showed that respondents seem to have limited knowledge on the subject. This study calls for more research and policies to support alternative options for using agrobiodiversity in food chains. It’s just another eco-scam to get control of critical water supplies & drive down land prices so some of their friends can buy it up cheap. They don’t care about the damage that’s done while they do this or as food prices double which they will. The theft of millions of acre feet of water years ago with the misguided ESA & gaming of the courts are unconstitutional on their face as is the sustainable water scam doubling down on scarcity inducing policies, deliberately meant to steal control of water from citizens & farmers. The takings clause of the 5th amendment is very simple. You can’t take anything from somebody without just compensation, & stealing water & then punishing farmers years later by charging them water fees to pump out of their own land is simply theft. It needs to be challenged in the courts or the food security of this nation will be damaged. For those of you that think this is not the case, simply research how much of the national Food supply comes from California, roughly half of that comes from the Central Valley, 1,000,000 acres of which is under threat from SGMA.
