📣 As 2024 wraps up, all eyes are on the Gemini Cooperation and the new Ocean carrier alliances! The launch of Gemini, a collaboration between Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd in February, has stirred industry discussions around its ambitious promise of achieving 90% on-time reliability. The question remains: can a hub-centric network like Gemini outperform MSC’s extensive direct-service model? Past performance, such as the 84% average from the 2M Alliance, shows high reliability is possible—but the Gemini network has unique factors that could work in its favor. With fewer port calls, Gemini statistically has a greater chance to maintain timeliness, but this may hinge on managing port delays under 2%. MSC, with its multiple direct routes, offers broader coverage but faces added delays per port. Only time will reveal the ultimate reliability performance, but we’re watching closely as these shifts promise to shape the future of global logistics. 🌍 #GlobalLogistics #GeminiAlliance #Maersk #HapagLloyd #MSC #SupplyChainReliability

At #TPM25: How Gemini Is Shaking Up the Schedule Reliability Game. When the Gemini Cooperation was announced in January 2024 — an alliance based on a shuttle and hub port network on several trade lanes and a promise of industry-leading schedule reliability — it signaled a sharp departure from the status quo. In an industry long used to direct services, Gemini challenged conventional wisdom in asserting that a hub-and-spoke network could produce the reliability many shippers need and expect. In this session, we will put a series of questions to Hapag-Lloyd CEO Rolf Habben Jansen and APM Terminals' Lars Mikael Jensen, who oversees the hub ports within A.P. Moller-Maersk. Gemini says will use London Gateway for shared network vessel calls DP World’s London Gateway has opened a £350 million ($442 million) all-electric fourth berth, part of its plan to become the UK’s largest container port within five years. This move also coincides with Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd announcing that their shared Gemini network will shift its UK calls from Felixstowe to London Gateway starting February, citing improved reliability and streamlined operations. Currently handling 2.9 million TEUs annually, London Gateway aims to increase its capacity by 1 million TEUs with the new berth, eventually surpassing Felixstowe’s 4 million TEUs. DP World has invested over £2 billion ($2.5 billion) in the port over the past decade, with plans for further expansion, including fifth and sixth berths. Located 30 miles east of London, the port integrates with the London Gateway Logistics Park, offering 9.25 million square feet of warehousing and multimodal transport links. The latest expansion has also created 200 new permanent jobs, reinforcing the port’s role in the UK’s global trade and sustainability goals. A week ago, I had the pleasure of participating in a joint town hall with two customers, Stolt Tank Containers and Hapag-Lloyd AG. I was asked to do a brief intro on the alliance landscape and share some thoughts about the hub and spoke concept, as well as the much-touted 90% reliability promise. The question I hear all the time is whether it's possible. Is 90% reliability doable - and how far are the carriers from that, now ? My first answer usually is that we don't even know how Gemini define 90% yet. But then, we can make some assumptions and infer a combined schedule reliability. Gemini faces 13-week phase-in before 90% reliability promise is tested: Clerc Gemini Cooperation, the new network from Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd, has a 13-week period starting February 1 to establish itself before the companies must prove their promised 90% schedule reliability, Maersk CEO Vincent Clerc shared. This transition from the 2M Alliance for Maersk and THE Alliance for Hapag-Lloyd will require three months to fully stabilize, during which Clerc aims for Gemini to achieve high reliability without offering rate discounts. Gemini will operate a "hub-and-spoke" model, which could add transit time but is designed to boost on-time performance to 90%, despite current industry averages of 50–55%. Clerc assured that the model was thoroughly tested, and Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd are confident in its potential reliability. Stay Informed: https://lnkd.in/gqyFG7aJ
