Construction Project Schedules are the most significant leverage point for improving social and economic outcomes for the industry such as improving family-friendliness and reducing the "lost last job" rate (highest of all industries). We count 10 dysfunctions caused by compressed schedules. However, owners do not have a method for determining a Sustainably responsible (Social, Economic and Enviromental) construction timeline. Of course, contractors do not build one project at a time, so portfolio management is the largest risk factor - see the chaos represented by multiple project resource demand curves (workers, managers, cash, equipment, etc) below in the comments. How do we transform culture in construction and enable greater flexibility and diversity in the workforce? In the latest edition of our #IndustryPerspectives column Stefanie Nutt, People & Culture Director for John Holland's M7-M12 Integration Project, shares how she successfully influenced change from within.   Stefanie championed the Late Start program, which allows site workers to attend a pre-start meeting at 8:45am, instead of the traditional 6:45am start. This enables them to fulfill personal responsibilities, such as school drop-offs or caring duties, while pursuing a fulfilling career in construction.   "The response has been overwhelming," Stefanie writes. "The pilot program attracted hundreds of applicants, from which we selected 11 women with diverse backgrounds and industry experience. Now, six months into an apprenticeship, these remarkable individuals can balance the demands of their personal lives while pursuing careers they once thought were out of reach."   "To make an impact and drive real change, you need to earn the respect of others and build teams that work cohesively towards shared goals. Pride is overflowing around our city as the 2024 high school graduation season has officially begun. At Communities In Schools of Memphis (CISM), we're gearing up for our annual Pathways to Success Celebration to praise and reward 125 students as they prepare for their next step. Walking across the stage to earn a diploma is a significant achievement that certainly calls for a party, but CISM’s greater goal is ensuring students have the tools to thrive in their chosen pathway when they leave high school. For some, that’s college, but for a steadily increasing number nowadays, it’s the workforce. As the Director of Career Pathways CISM, I'm deeply proud to acknowledge the impactful journey of our Work Experience Program (WEX), a key component within our College & Career Readiness initiative and, in my opinion, the heartbeat of our commitment to empowering students beyond traditional academics. WEX opens doors for career exploration and skill development through internships and part-time jobs. This real-world exposure doesn't just enhance resumes; it transforms lives. The research speaks volumes. Students engaged in work experiences are more sought after by employers. They excel academically, bolster self-confidence, and sharpen essential life skills like decision-making and financial management. This year alone, our students have collectively earned hundreds of thousands of dollars in wages through WEX, gaining invaluable experience that sets them apart in a competitive job market. We’re so fortunate to partner with local businesses and organizations across Shelby, Fayette, Lauderdale, and Tipton counties who believe in our mission and offer opportunities to immerse students in diverse career environments. The impact is clear: students emerge with confidence, equipped with vital workforce skills, and ready to excel in professional life. Let's get the phrase, "not every student needs to go to college," out of our lexicon. It is steeped in a history of stigma, discrimination, and inequity. It implies that there are those students who can, and those who can't. In the Career Technical Education world, we hear this all the time, perhaps to justify career pathways. I say we replace this statement with: Not every viable, engaging career requires a four year degree. As CTE educators, I believe it is our mission to create pathways that give students options which include early college credit, a-g eligibility, industry recognized certifications, job shadowing, internships and pre-apprenticeships. Allowing students to choose how they can achieve a livable wage, viable career they can engage and thrive in free of barriers and stigmas should be our ultimate goal.. When it comes to young people who participate in #nondegreepathways, it's imperative that we take a close look at the results they're seeing—and how satisfied they are with their chosen paths. This past summer at #JFFHorizons, we announced the American Student Assistance Center for Career Navigation at Jobs for the Future (JFF), focused on helping youth traverse the many options before them, with a goal of helping to simplify the often-complex landscape of career navigation.
