One of my takeaways from “James: A Novel” by Percival Everett was: if you’re not making mistakes, you’re not learning. I first heard this concept from John Wooden, the college basketball coach often considered ‘the Wizard of Westwood.’ As much as I would like to think it’s obvious that we learn the most from our mistakes, to many it isn’t. Every time I watch the March Madness tournament basketball games, I get so inspired… by the coaches! Take LSU's Kim Mulkey. She took the Lady Tigers to a new record her first year and the NCAA Championship win the next. How? Team alignment. A shared vision, clear goals, and knowing how and when to utilize each member’s strengths – these are the defining attributes of an aligned team. Without it, chaos, conflict, and confusion ensues.
