Todd's Top Tip for Excellent Educators (Edition 122, September 27, 2024) Lessons Learned from spectacular playoff season of Kansas City Royals: 1. It's not how you start but how you finish. (Last year, one of worst seasons ever. This year? Here we are!) 2. Do your best, forget the rest. (Bobby Whitt Jr.- recording best season ever to NOT win MVP) 3. Be a goldfish (Short negative memory) (How many times fid Bobby actually make past out to end the game? Many) 4. Only two things you can control- attitude and effort (Star 1B Vinny goes doen with injury at height of playoff race, but here we are) 5. Never let 1% of day ruin 99% of day. 6. Good luck is where hard work and preparation meet opportunity (Royals lose. Twins lose too- we are in!) Go KC!

What is your "I'm going to cut down the nets" dream? Jimmy Valvano's dream in 1980: "I'm going to win a national championship and cut the nets down". The team visualized and practiced achieving the dream by cutting the nets down. He painted the picture for them: "If I can get you to see what I'm seeing, to dream what I'm dreaming, we can win it." At first it was awkward, and year 1 didn't end well. It took 3 years of ups and downs before the manifestation of his vision in one of the greatest upsets ever. Do you think NC State wins it all in 1983 without Jimmy V's clear vision and belief he instilled in his team? Have you visualized your dream? Imagined the time and place it will happen? The challenges you'll have to overcome? The behaviors you'll have to exude? The feeling you'll have when it's accomplished? Paint your picture. Make your dream tangible and explainable in detail. Start April with 2 minutes of inspiration from Jimmy V:

Powerful speaker. If you get a chance, read his book..
Owner of Savannah Bananas, Creator of Banana Ball, Author of Fans First & Find Your Yellow Tux, Keynote Speaker
My pregame speech in Cleveland focused more on the future than any talk I've given to our organization. After launching our first ever Banana Ball Youth Tournament in Cleveland with 900 kids, I knew going into our fourth MLB Stadium, we had a much bigger responsibility to these kids than ever before. Before the game, I wanted to leave the right message to our entire organization about the obligation we had with the next generation of Banana Ball players in the audience. What were they going to see from us? How were we going to make them feel? What fans first moments would we create for them? I believe 100% that these kids could be the future of Banana Ball. What they experienced from us would help shape their views on not only what the Bananas were all about but what Fans First was all about. We owed it to them to show the fun and joy we bring to the game but also the dedication that we bring to the fans. And not just the fans in general, but our focus on one fan at a time, and one kid at a time. As we always say, "Every game is someone's first game," but this night felt even more important because of what it could mean for the future. At the end of the night our goal was to leave Cleveland proud of the experience we provided. I'm proud to say we did that and then some and I'm so grateful for our team for always believing in who we are, what we stand for and delivering on that promise.

The concept this week. You don’t need luck; you need to do your best. As a football fan, I always look forward to the upset victories. Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals have made it increasingly difficult for smaller colleges to compete with the traditional powerhouses in the current college football landscape. Insert Northern Illinois’ upset victory over #5 Notre Dame. Notre Dame paid NIU almost 1.5 Million dollars to play them in South Bend, under the pretense that they would win big. As the number 5 ranked college football program in the country, Notre Dame was favored to win by four touchdowns against NIU. Last week, Notre Dame beat nationally ranked Texas A&M in College Station, and everyone believed that the Fighting Irish were on their way to the College Football Playoffs. Not so fast, my friends (Lee Corso Voice). NIU’s starters were primarily juniors and seniors who had been in the program for a long time. They know exactly what’s required; they have 10k+ hours in the program. After NIU beat ND, the post-game reporter asked the NIU head coach, Thomas Hammond, what he shared with the team to inspire them to win. Hammond responded, “I told my team we didn’t need luck; we just needed our best.” Don’t bet on luck this week if you don’t have to. Trust and believe in your best. Believing and obsessing about improving your best helps you avoid being outcome-oriented, keeps you present, and helps you progress towards that ‘big opportunity’. Look at this post-game interview! I love College Football for this reason. #MusaMonday #MondayMotivation

Three Lessons... My son was selected to play on a Northeast Regional team that competed in a showcase in PA a couple of weeks ago. I was also happy to be asked to be a member of the coaching staff for these U15 young men, which was a joy. These kids all play a pretty elevated level of soccer and are usually their own most harsh critics. Outside of any tactical or technical drills that we facilitated for them, I personally tried to advise on 3 "non-soccer but soccer lessons" in the time I was with them... 1- When your friend makes a mistake, he knows it. No need for you to tell him. This is an opportunity for you to pick up his spirits. Lift others 2- When you make a mistake, dust it off and move on. Every second you dwell on your mistake, your team is a player down. Learn from your mistakes (losses) but don't let it fester 3- "How can I help this dude right now" something I asked them to constantly think during the game. Whether you are directly involved in the play or not, put yourself in the right place before you are even called upon. Be a willing teammate by being prepared We ended the weekend a bit hobbled with some injuries but came back from a 3-0 deficit to score 3 goals in the last 20 minutes to tie 3-3 in our last game. I wonder if "3 lessons" helped at all?

There’s a ton of uncertainty surrounding NIL right now: whether the current pay-to-play system and wide-open transfer portal is sustainable, how quickly college sports will fully lose any semblance of amateurism, and so much more. The main door that NIL opens is highly targeted, localized, and story-driven partnerships, like this one. Brands that are agile and active in the space, like Manishewitz signing Retzlaff fo this one-of-a-kind deal, will save money, see higher ROI, and create more viral marketing moments. . . #sportsbiz #sportsmarketing #NIL
BYU's Jake Retzlaff, the first Jewish starting QB in program history, has signed an NIL deal with Manischewitz, a Jewish food company. Retzlaff's partnership, the brand's first-ever sports deal, runs from Hanukkah through Passover.
