In the UK, sales in bar chains declined for eight consecutive months (from January to August) according to CGA data, and pub and bar insolvencies were up by 30% in the past year, which is attributed to drinkers reducing their spending because of the cost-of-living crisis. The Euro 2024 football championship provided a much-needed boost for summer trading across the continent, but it’s hardly sufficient to save the industry year-round. Jack Sotti, of Archive & Myth bar in London’s Hippodrome, adds that the industry is “pretty brutal at the moment. Especially recently, in regards to the late-night scene, we’re seeing a lot of club closures every month. Unless there’s a significant government change in policy, we’re going to see a mass extinction of the UK nightclub scene, which is really brutal.” The Night Time Industries Association has calculated that by 2030 there could be no nightclubs left in the UK. While inflation is wreaking havoc for consumers and businesses alike, Sotti doesn’t believe decreased spending power spells disaster for the on-trade. He uses Three Sheets (which opened its second venue in London’s Soho in March) as an example: “It offers a cocktail menu that’s around £15 (US$19) per cocktail. People are drinking less and better so, in turn, spending less. Prioritising little luxuries is a trend I’m noticing alongside the cost-of-living crisis, with people still wanting to go out and have a nice time.” #Whisky1901 #CaskInvestment #WhiskyInvestment #whisky #whiskylover #whiskygram #instawhisky #whiskylife #scotland #whiskytasting #dram #instadram

The Changing Face of the Pub Industry The closure of over 50 pubs per month in the UK during the first half of 2024 as written about by the The Morning Advertiser, highlights the challenges facing a beloved British institution. This is a significant loss for our communities and a sign of ongoing challenges facing the pub industry. What are your thoughts on this trend? How can we ensure the future of the pub industry? #PubIndustry #Challenges #CommunityHubs #UK #BritishCulture https://lnkd.in/ejr_XZku

As we see politicians pulling pints in pubs during their election campaigns, it’s a stark reminder of the central role pubs and hospitality venues play in our communities. However, the real support needed goes beyond photo opportunities. With today’s general election in the UK, it's crucial for the incoming government to back our beloved pubs and hospitality sector. Key initiatives should include: - Ensuring the current business rates re-evaluation doesn't lead to unsustainable rate increases. - Introducing a cap on energy prices for businesses to help manage operational costs. - Reviewing the Pub Code adjudication system to balance the scales fairly between pub tenants and pub-cos. Over-inflated beer prices for tied pubs should be addressed. - Implementing a VAT Relief system specifically for smaller businesses to provide much-needed financial respite. Caroline Nokes MP kindly agreed to open our pub a few years ago, however, she did not ask me one question about the business or what support we needed. Let’s hope for a government that truly understands and supports the backbone of our local economies. Cheers to a brighter future for our pubs! #SupportLocal #PubsMatter #HospitalityHeroes #ElectionDay2024 #BusinessRates #EnergyCap #VATRelief

Michael Kill, CEO of the Night Time Industries Association: “We welcome the Government’s decision to scrap the proposed smoking ban for pubs and clubs. This shift recognises the important role our venues play as controlled, socially responsible spaces within communities. The initial proposals risked significant harm to our industry, which is still in the process of recovery from the pandemic and other economic pressures.” “The revised focus of the Tobacco and Vapes Bill on restricting smoking in high-risk areas, such as those outside hospitals and schools, strikes a much-needed balance. This approach addresses public health concerns while also protecting the night-time economy, which contributes so much to our society both culturally and financially. We are grateful that the Government took into account the strong representations from our sector and listened to the voices of operators across the UK.” “This pragmatic decision will allow pubs, bars, and clubs to continue operating in a way that respects the choices of patrons while also prioritising the wellbeing of local communities. We look forward to working with policymakers to ensure that our venues remain vibrant, safe, and welcoming spaces for all.” https://buff.ly/4edPDlr

A Pub Crisis Brewing in the UK 🍺 The future of UK pubs is under serious threat. From April 2025, pubs with a £100,000 rateable value will face a £19,000 annual hike in business rates due to changes in relief. To cover this cost, they’ll need to sell an additional 60,000 pints a year – that’s: 1,200 more pints a week 170 extra pints every single day And that’s on top of mounting pressures from soaring energy bills, rising wages, and escalating supply costs. The reality is stark: for many pubs, survival won’t be possible. Pubs are not just businesses; they are the heart of our communities, offering jobs, connection, and culture. Without urgent action, we risk losing a cornerstone of British life. Policymakers must understand the scale of this challenge and work with the industry to find solutions. Let’s not allow our local pubs to become a thing of the past. Here is a picture of my favourite pub and i'm going to make more of an effort this year (i do already go a lot 😆 ) to help these! What is your favourite pub? #SaveOurPubs #HospitalityCrisis #BusinessRates

The cost pressures facing pubs couldn't be clearer.💷 BBPA research has found that pubs are only earning 12p profit per pint, meaning it is more important than ever that Rt Hon Rachel Reeves supports pubs in next weeks' Budget by: 1️⃣ Reducing beer duty 2️⃣ Maintaining the 75% business rate relief 3️⃣ Look at reforming business rates across the sector https://lnkd.in/eTb64nAK
