When I hire someone at F30 to welcome in our team, one broad thing I look for is if the applicant understands my vision for F30, the kind of agency I am building, or intend to build. Now, an applicant does not have a clear answer to this, so to break it down into identifiable markers, I look for the right attitude. If the person is dedicated, can commit to learning in addition to having knowledge, skills and soft skills. Skills can be taught, tools can be taught, softwares can be taught, but the attitude is something ingrained in a person, that's what I believe. F30 stands for a date- February 30 which is an impossible date in the calendar. The vision that I understand for F30 and it is inspired by Adidas tagline - Impossible is nothing. How many times have I told you that Cazoo would never make it for the long haul? How many? Very many, that’s how many. And so it has come to pass with the news today (6th March) that founder Alex Chesterman has given up all hope of seeing Cazoo become a global (at birth) and when that didn’t work, a UK-only market leading purveyor of used cars. Here’s the plan. Cazoo is to run a fire sale of all its stock starting today and then turn itself into a pale imitation of Autotrader as a pure-play marketplace. What could possibly go wrong? And along with turfing out the stock goes CEO Paul Whitehead, who took over the top job from Chesterman in March 2023. He was previously Cazoo’s COO since its founding. No replacement has been announced – apparently Cazoo will be run by committee. That’s should work well, shouldn’t it! And just to top it all off, Cazoo will inevitably delist from the NYSE, which it joined in 2021 as a ‘back-door johnnie’ through a SPAC (aka weapon of value destruction) deal. Be reminded that Cazoo has never, ever made a profit. Frankly, I don’t think Cazoo will survive the transition. Give me a while to bask in the glory of self-righteousness and then I’ll rake over the ashes in a future post (sorry, I never put ‘humble’ in my LinkedIn profile). PS I do have to thank Chesterman, though, for his unerring support of the world's greatest sport, #snooker, for which Cazoo has been a loyal sponsor in recent years. No maximum break for him, I'm afraid. #usedcars

I’m a massive anime fan and even bigger fan of the greatest #anime film studio that has ever existed. But! I’m an even bigger fan of money. I can’t get enough of the stuff. Big fan. Bigly. I’ve come to learn that some things are more important to Japanese IP owners like the acclaimed #StudioGhibli than something as crass as turnover. Things like quality, consistency, stewardship and continuity matter as much if not more to these legacy brands. This is a company that once it has found a reliable partner it trusts is in no hurry to find more or go scouting for a “better deal” on the next film license. It’s why Ghibli’s European theatrical and home entertainment distribution partnerships have rarely changed since the release of Spirited Away at the beginning of the 2000s. It’s why there’s hardly any non-Japanese consumer products partnerships with Ghibli. And it’s why, when you’re in Japan you absolutely should acquire all of the Ghibli merch you can afford. I visited the GB store in Shibuya’s high-end #MiyashitaPark complex today. Prices for Mini-sculpts start at around $10-15 USD, with premium apparel like windbreakers and jeans starting at $150-$200 USD. All garments handcrafted in Japan. No fast fashion. Here’s a little video of some of their wares. Also! Don’t video or take photos in the store it’s not allowed and I was told off. Studio Ghibli do not do fast moving consumer goods.
