The Journey of Alex Johnson Alex Johnson grew up in a small town, dreaming of becoming an entrepreneur. After college, he launched his first tech startup, which initially took off. However, after just two years, the company faced a major setback due to unforeseen market changes, and Alex was forced to shut it down. Devastated but not defeated, he took time to reflect and learn from his mistakes. Rather than viewing this failure as the end, Alex saw it as an opportunity for growth. With renewed determination, he returned to the drawing board, honing his skills and seeking mentorship. Years later, Alex launched his second venture, a software company focused on helping businesses streamline their operations. This time, his experiences paid off. The company thrived, earning accolades and significant market share. Reflecting on his journey, Alex often said, "Success is not final, failure is not fatal; it is the courage to continue that counts." His story exemplifies the resilience needed in business and the belief that perseverance can lead to ultimate success.

Approximately one year ago, we founded our startup, Joltz . We were four teenagers (basically kids) who didn’t know anything about business, finances, product development, etc. Now, we are celebrating the first anniversary of Joltz. This year has changed us a lot. We grew as individuals and, most importantly, as a team. We acquired many new skills and learned so much. The most significant change is that our pure dream has turned into a plan. But how were we able to change and learn so fast? Here are some factors that helped us: Consistency: We realized that showing up every day for a couple of hours brings much more than one twenty-hour session on the weekend. Why? In my opinion, consistency brings you into a flow. By working every day, you are able to solve problems as they arise, not when it’s already too late. This also reduces the amount of stress, which is an important bonus. Never Give Up: This is advice we first heard from another startup owner at the beginning of our journey, and then from another one, and another one… Now, I can 100% relate to this advice because it has helped us in so many situations that felt hopeless. However, if you push long enough, it becomes impossible not to find a solution. If there’s one piece of advice I could give to a young entrepreneur, it would be these three words: “Never give up.” Connections: At the beginning of my entrepreneurial journey, I was absolutely convinced that success was possible without leaving my room. I thought the only thing that mattered was working hard enough. However, I now know that I was mistaken. I’m not saying it’s impossible, but it is so much easier to realize your dreams when you know the right people. It can save you a lot of time and is much more enjoyable. For example, when I have a question in a certain area, I’m so glad to have someone who is really good at it to ask, rather than spending hours on research and learning from my own mistakes—which can also be pretty expensive.

**The Journey of Building a Startup: The Truliv Story** Back in 2017, we had a vision of creating a hospitality company—but not the conventional kind. We envisioned an asset light Alternate Hospitality services business that would cater to a diverse demographic, from 18 to 80 years old. We identified five key verticals: Student Housing, Co-living, Staycation, Temple Hospitality, and Retirement Housing. This was our vision, but we knew we needed to build one by one. In 2019, I met Rohit Reddy , who shared this vision, and Truliv was born. We bootstrapped the company with initial capital from DRA Homes Life, as expected, threw us a curveball with COVID-19 hitting the very next year. Our plans were disrupted, but not our entrepreneurial spirit. We meticulously managed our financials with limited capital and sustained through that challenging year. Fast forward to 2024, Truliv remains bootstrapped with a small dilution to friends and family. We’ve been growing at 250% annually since COVID, and most importantly, we’re **profitable**. Starting with Co-living, we expanded into Staycation, applying the same financial discipline, and turned a profit in the first year itself. With a proven playbook, we’re now poised to scale across the country. Despite multiple approaches from VCs, we’ve stayed true to our path, politely declining unsolicited advice and their growth playbooks. We’re growing our way. Not that we won't raise capital but we are very clear on what kind of capital. **Key Learnings:** 1. Apply clean financial metrics and benchmark the team to achieve them. Share the vision with them but make them accountable on each financial metric. 2. Course-correct every wrong decision. Growth shouldn’t come from burning money over mistakes. 3. Consistency over speed: Until you have a playbook, focus on horizontal growth rather than chasing a hockey stick growth. 4. Own your agenda: Remember, you’re in it to make money for yourself, not others. Don’t let anyone else dictate your journey, no matter how attractive capital is. 5. Art of Elimination :- Say no to more things and say 'yes' to the best. 6. We've ruined our idea of a successful business and life. 1. The Forbes 30 under 30. 2. The Airbnbs, the Stripes, Ubers, Facebooks, Instagrams, OpenAIs. 3. The constant celebration of $69M fundraises. It's absurd. You buy your way into Forbes, and 1 in 16667 startups becomes $1B+. The happiest and most successful entrepreneurs I know have opted out of this fantasy startup dream world we've created. They found a niche and built a profitable business that affords them freedom and a nice lifestyle. And say no to a lot of nonsense. It's incredibly hard to do because we've all convinced ourselves that success is the massive exit and anything less is a failure. But what's wrong with having the freedom to say F it and go to the beach on a sunny day? To let your partner take a leave from work without stress To be physically and emotionally present with your kids To have time to make healthy choices? If you deep down want to change the world, go for it. We need people like you. But for most of us, we just want a nice life. Don't let someone else define your idea of success. Credit: Neal O'Grady
