A priceless tip for leaders on hiring from Steve Jobs. Do you agree with this? I definitely agree, in my previous post, I highlighted how relying on hierarchical decision-making can ultimately result in technical debt. #techteam #teamleadership #techleader #cto #ceo #businessleader

While early-stage companies tend to prefer to hire Heads of Engineering from their respective sectors, our research into 65+ SaaS companies found that sector affinity does not have a strong correlation with company longevity 🚫 Rather than focusing on sector expertise, we believe CEOs should focus on hiring engineering leaders with overall strong leadership and technical skills. Some leaders chase quick wins, one after the other. (Yep, I’ve done it, too!) - Close the big client right before the end of Q4! - Switch out a low-value-added vendor. - Hire away a star from the competition. - Release a feature that customers have been begging for. 🎉 Quick wins can work for a while, especially in rapidly changing industries. Still, most leadership roles worth having require wise decisions to build the next years of business success. 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐬𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐮𝐦-𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦 𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐬. - Develop several hi-potentials into rockstars. - Improve your product prioritization process. - Deal with tech debt. - Build a team that trusts each other. 🌱 Even if your organization's planning process doesn't require you to create a high-level project plan for each strategic objective, do it anyway. That way you'll have thought through how to accomplish each objective, and you'll know how much lead time your team will need. Planning for wins in a methodical way will enable you to figure out what resources you need to acquire or build early. For example, if your legal department is weak, you can probably pay for outside contracting expertise when you need it. However, if your biz dev team is not used to approaching bigger companies, you'll probably need to start working on this soon. Executives should prioritize strong leadership and technical skills over sector-specific expertise, as sector expertise has minimal influence on tenure or overall effectiveness. Leaders with prior Head of Engineering experience at similarly sized companies tend to have the longest tenures, indicating that adaptability and leadership are more crucial for scaling and longevity than specialized sector knowledge.

Technical founders can develop into great leaders by having a strong sense of urgency. As BCV partner Kevin Zhang explains, modern engineering teams are used to organized sprints, so technical founders should treat other parts of the business with a similar timeline of “as soon as possible.” After all, time kills all deals. When I first considered a Revenue Operations transformation, I quickly realized it was more than just hiring a VP of RevOps. It’s a journey that requires careful planning and a deep understanding of your business. The first few months are crucial. You’re not looking for immediate change, but laying the groundwork for long-term success. I found that bringing in the right leader—even on a fractional basis—was key. We had to rethink our organizational design, adjust leadership expectations, and kick off projects that would set a strong operating rhythm and improve our data management. It wasn’t about overnight success. It was about building a foundation that would enhance team synergy and efficiency over time. By month six, we started to see the real benefits. Are you thinking about making this shift? What challenges are you anticipating? Let’s discuss. #RevOps #BusinessTransformation #Leadership #ChangeManagement #BusinessStrategy #OperationalExcellence
