Today we are celebrating International Women's Day under the motto "#InspireInclusion", which emphasises the fundamental importance of inclusion for the promotion of gender equality. Women still face visible and invisible barriers, stereotypes, lack of appreciation and respect. Institutions of higher education like the HSBA Hamburg School of Business Administration should and must play a central role in promoting #diversity and gender #equality. It is time to not only stand up for more diversity, but to actively promote and live it! Gender equality and #diversity offer opportunities and enrich us all - a fact that we should emphasise again and again. Here are some thoughts on the pivotal role of institutions of higher education: Universities should … 1.  promote diversity by running targeted outreach programs at schools in different neighbourhoods and areas with high levels of migration. 2.  provide more support and guidance specifically to female students as well as students from underrepresented groups to promote their empowerment. 3. create an inclusive campus including formats and events that promote exchange and cooperation between students from different backgrounds. 4.  integrate intercultural skills training and awareness-raising workshops into the curriculum to promote understanding and appreciation of diversity. 5.  take greater account of diverse perspectives into teaching, for example through the use of diverse teaching materials and case studies. 6.  utilize the untapped potential of community partners and companies that are committed to diversity and inclusion for projects, mentoring programmes and research projects. Yesterday was International Women's day (happy belated to all the ladies). Whilst we celebrated the day, I couldn't help but to remember times that I have witnessed beviours towards females that were disturbing at best, and scary at worst! I don't want to be an alarmist, but having done some research on this subject, it's clear to me that misogyny in the learning space is a serious problem that can have harmful effects on both young women and men. It perpetuates gender inequality, fosters a hostile environment, and affects the psychological and emotional well being of all involved. While misogyny targets females, it's important to understand how young men can also be affected by it. In education misogyny manifests itself in ways such as, the reinforcement of traditional gender roles and stereotypes, which can marginalise women and contribute to the normalisation of misogynistic attitudes. I have witnessed verbal, physical, and cyber harassment targeting girls and some female educators, fundamentally, this created a toxic and disrespectful environment. I blame this on the absence of comprehensive education on gender equality and respectful behaviour. Whilst misogyny mostly affects females, it also influences the perpetrators. Some of the impacts include engaging in misogynistic behaviour which can hinder emotional development by reinforcing toxic masculinity, suppressing empathy and emotional intelligence. Internalising misogynistic beliefs could cause distorted views of self and others, affecting self worth and perpetuating harmful behavioural patterns. To combat this, and support young men with overcoming misogynistic attitudes, several strategies can be implemented. We can implement comprehensive education on gender equality, consent, and respectful relationships can challenge misogynistic attitudes and promote healthy perspectives. Establish mentorship programs to provide positive male role models can offer alternative perspectives and guidance in navigating healthy masculinity. Encourage open dialogue about gender issues and promote inclusive discussions to create a supportive environment, and we can also provide access to counseling and support services that can help address the impact of misogynistic attitudes on mental health and well being. In conclusion, it is ultimately down to us to ensure that our children are educated to respect themselves by respecting others! We must also address misogyny in schools, this is crucial for creating a safe and inclusive environment for all learners. We have to acknowledge the impact of misogynistic attitudes on young men and implement targeted interventions, educational establishments and educators can play a vital role in promoting gender equality and supporting the holistic development of all young people. 🌐 Despite progress in gender equality, the World Economic Forum projects up to 5 more generations before achieving gender parity. Future IM/Pact recent industry report indicates that gender parity in investments is achievable by 2030. It will require effort, but the industry is committed to attracting and retaining top female talent, which is encouraging for women pursuing investing careers. 🔎 Key findings: ▫️ Proportional hiring, promotion and retention rates of women at most levels are now equal to or greater than those of men. ▫️ The biggest gains in gender diversity have been made at the entry-level roles. However, exit rates among female senior analysts remain significantly higher than men, largely due to talent poaching. ▫️ A third of firms now offer an internship or graduate program. RECAP TRAINING: CAREER ORIENTATION TOWARD GENDER EMPOWERMENT IN THE EDUCATION SECTOR And that's a wrap of Gender equality across Vietnam industries season 3, focusing on "Career orientation towards gender empowerment". Here are some of the highlights that GEAI’s so proud of: 👉 15 projects and 1/3 are from the Mekong Delta and coastal area from Da Nang to Southern Vietnam. 40 trainees from the Education or Education-related backgrounds in 8 different provinces. 👉 Expanded impacts to K12 education, making advancements to early career guidance without gender prejudices. 👉 Hundreds of direct beneficiaries and countless of indirect beneficiaries from the impact projects done by these 15 groups. Different stakeholders were chosen, some are traditionally challenging to influence: parents, students, teachers, leaders. The trainees owned the ideas, are empowered and supported to bring in innovative solutions, while guided to measure impacts and implement sustainability of the projects. 👉 Most importantly, participants reflected on gender issues in career choice, realized their biases, worked on it, tried to raise awareness on other stakeholders in their school systems, failed and learned, succeeded and wanted to keep doing this over and over again. GEAI found people who care and share the same values. ⭐ GEAI focus on planting the good seeds in gender equality practices across industries and sectors in Vietnam. We focus mostly on the medium and long-term impacts through customized trainings with mid-management professionals. As we kick off the beginning of March, let's not forget—it's Gender Equality Month. As a CIO, I believe it's our duty to actively break down the barriers that hinder diversity in our tech industry. It's important that we create an environment where all voices are not only heard but valued. Embracing diversity, equality, and inclusivity can actually bolster innovation, communication, and employee engagement. When everyone feels a sense of belonging in the workplace, it can be transformative. To achieve true gender equality in the tech industry, we need to address the pipeline issue. I think it's important to encourage girls to pursue STEM education from an early age, support scholarship programs, and collaborate with educational institutions in order to close the gender gap in tech-related fields. A male contact who attended our TrailblazHER at TU Dublin launch at the Dublin Chamber International Women’s Day event said to me: “I am really supportive of what you are doing, and I hope everything goes really well for you, I just don’t actually know what I myself can do to help women or gender equality. What can I do when I go to work tomorrow to help?”  As I drove home, I began to wonder how many other supportive people maybe struggled with the same question. The brilliant question inspired the below post which includes a list of potential actions that any one person could consider engaging in. 1. 📢 Advocacy & Promoting Women’s Rights: Advocating in the workplace for gender equality and the empowerment of women in all aspects of life including education, employment, leadership and decision-making. Recognising and promoting women’s rights, including the right to education, healthcare, economic opportunities, and freedom from violence and discrimination. 2. 🗣 Challenging Stereotypes: Challenging stereotypes and biases that limit women’s potential and perpetuate inequality. 3. 📘 Understanding Intersectionality: Educating ourselves to better understand and recognise the diverse range of experiences and challenges faced by women of different backgrounds, including race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, disability, and socio-economic status. 4. 🏆 Celebrating Achievements: Celebrating the achievements and contributions of women in various fields, such as science, technology, business, arts, politics and more. 5. 👍 Allyship: Being a vocal ally of women and recognising the solidarity and powerful impact of unity among women and allies in pursuit of gender equality and women’s rights. 6. 👩 Supporting Women’s Empowerment: Promoting and engaging with initiatives like TrailblazHER at TU Dublin that support women’s empowerment, advances gender equality and creates a more inclusive and equitable society. 📚 Book Review: "Gender Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Academia" Under the guidance of my supervisor, Dr Elizabeth Ratcliffe, I recently had the privilege of summarizing and critically reviewing "Gender Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Academia," edited by Melina Duarte, Katrin Losleben, and Fjørtoft Kjersti. ✍ Brief Summary: This compelling book delves into the complex challenges of gender diversity and equity within academic settings, offering actionable recommendations for fostering inclusive environments.
