I recently got together with 'Femi Banjo and Neel Majumder at HealthTechX Academy to discuss the landscape of digital health in Africa. Our conversation covered several key topics: 1. The Scale of Digital Health in Africa: - The digital health sector in Africa is growing rapidly, with significant investments and a projected market value reaching billions of dollars by the mid-2020s. Key statistics and figures illustrate the increasing adoption of digital health solutions across the continent. 2. Top Trends in African Digital Health: - Telemedicine: Expanding access to healthcare in remote areas. - Mobile Health (mHealth): Leveraging mobile technology for health education and services. - Electronic Health Records (EHR): Improving data management and patient care. - Health Information Systems: Enhancing healthcare delivery through better data analysis and management. 3. Success Stories of Digital Health Initiatives: - We highlighted several initiatives that have significantly improved access to essential healthcare services in low-income communities. 4. Opportunities for Entrepreneurs: - There are abundant opportunities for new entrepreneurs to create impactful digital health solutions in Africa, especially in areas such as telehealth, mobile diagnostics, and health information systems. The growing need for affordable and scalable solutions in low-resource settings presents a fertile ground for innovation. 5. In-Demand Skills for Digital Health Careers: - Skills such as data analysis, software development, and healthcare informatics are highly sought after in the African digital health sector. For those transitioning from other fields, gaining knowledge in these areas, along with understanding local health challenges, is crucial. 6. Challenges in Adopting Digital Health Technologies: - Hospitals in low-income regions face challenges such as limited infrastructure, lack of trained personnel, and financial constraints. Addressing these barriers is essential for successful technology adoption. 7. The Future of Digital Health Technologies in Africa: - We foresee a future where digital health technologies become integral to healthcare systems across Africa, driving improvements in patient care, health outcomes, and system efficiencies. [Digital Determinants of Health] Last month, I joined the Digital Transformations for Health Lab Regional Youth Champion Roundtable Discussion of Digital Determinants of Health with the lead authors of the Lancet series. The purpose of the meeting was to engage youth voices and gather our feedback on emerging ideas of the Digital Determinants of Health (DDoH). As the world becomes increasingly digitized, the impact of technology on health is becoming more apparent, leading to the emergence of the term DDoH. During the roundtable, we discussed several topics, including what questions should be asked about technology affecting health, what should be included in DDoH's definition etc. One recurrent theme is digital equity - digital health for all cannot be achieved without equitable access to internet, devices, and literacy. It was such an engaging session, and as always, I shared my perspectives, and learned so much from my peers. I am very much looking forward to this new Lancet series on DDoH! #digitalhealth #digitalequity #Lancet #healthcare

Comprehensive insights on how health can be impacted in the digital age.
Director, Dept of Digital Health & Innovation at WHO. Passionate believer in possibilities. There's always a way to do/be better.
🌍💻 Excited to share a landmark new World Health Organization WHO Regional Office for Europe report: "Addressing Health Determinants in a Digital Age" This report offers a forward-thinking framework to understand how digital transformations are reshaping the determinants of health—spanning social, political, commercial, and digital domains—and their profound impact on well-being. 🔍 Key Insights from the Report: ✅ 127 health determinants identified, categorized across personal, community, technology, policy, and political/economic domains. ⚡ Urgent issues like digital divides, data governance, misinformation, and equitable digital access require immediate attention. 🌐 Stresses the need for robust, inclusive digital public infrastructure (#DPI) and policies prioritizing transparency, equity, and the safe use of data and #AI. This report underscores the dual-edged nature of digital transformations—offering unprecedented opportunities while posing new challenges. It is a call to action for policymakers, technologists, and public health experts to harness these advances for equitable, inclusive, and sustainable health outcomes. I encourage you to explore the report and join the conversation on how we can collectively address these pressing issues.
