The mass displacement crisis in Ukraine continues and refugee-hosting governments are not doing enough to support local governments and communities, who are at the forefront of providing support and assistance. Sponsored Ukrainians arriving today lack access to resettlement assistance and benefits. That’s why Congress urgently needs to authorize eligibility for newly arriving Ukrainian humanitarian parolees. Migrants can quickly become scapegoats for social and economic decline, crime and unemployment, pressure on health and welfare services and lack of security. That's why media plays a crucial role in the definition of the narratives around migration. ❗ Individuals and outlets reporting on migration can engage with their audience to help others better understand the complexities of migration by applying ethical principles, avoiding stereotypes and developing good newsroom practices. 💡 📰 Media may also reach decision makers, which means it holds the power to significantly impact not just policy, but peoples’ lives.

We are in the midst of one of the greatest intergenerational wealth transfers in history. According to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, at the end of 2023, over 117 million people were displaced due to ‘persecution, conflict, violence, human rights violations and events seriously disturbing the public order’. In this STEP Journal article Suzanne Reisman TEP shines a light on the impact of family displacement on their wealth planning. It can be all too easy for us white folx to witness the atrocious behaviour of these racist, bigoted and dangerous people and to dismiss it with a simple, "these people don't speak for me". The thing is, unless you speak out against them, they will. Their voices have been loud. Their actions have been louder. Unless you add your voice in strident opposition of everything that these terrorists are extolling, how are our non-white friends, colleagues, loved ones supposed to feel safe? If their voices are loud and present, we, too, must be vocal and drown them out. We must be clear: that we will not tolerate this rhetoric. Disowning the rioters is not enough. We must put ourselves between the rioters and those we purport to care about - both online and physically where possible. We must work harder to create actively anti-racist workplaces, schools, countries. To teach our children about their history and their responsibilities. This is an active role that we must play. Not passive, not hiding in shame. There can be no room for hate.
We are appalled by the riots and domestic terror attacks planned to target organisations working with refugees, asylum seekers and migrants across England this evening. Years of divisive, anti-immigration rhetoric from sections of the UK media and the far right have emboldened these violent attacks, for which displaced people, Muslim communities and People of Colour are bearing the brunt. There is NO room for hate. We stand in solidarity with displaced communities. No one should be made to live in fear due to this senseless violence, racism and Islamophobia. We must stay united in solidarity and love, and work together for a just and compassionate world. #RefugeesWelcome #NoToHate #Solidarity

📰 New Open Access Article by Ana Lopez Garcia: "Migrant Money and Political Unrest: Remittances and Support for Protest in Latin America and the Caribbean" 🌍💸 Can money from abroad fuel political unrest in migrant-sending democracies? 🤔 Ana Lopez Garcia's research shows that remittance recipients are as likely as non-recipients to support peaceful and lawful protests. However, they are more approving of citizens resorting to unlawful and violent protest behaviour. Statistical analysis reveals that support for violent protest among recipients is linked to their dissatisfaction with political parties and politicians. Discover how migrant resources shape political participation in developing democracies. 💭 Read the full article here! https://lnkd.in/eN8Zc_PB #PoliticalScience #Remittances #LatinAmerica #Caribbean #SocialUnrest #OpenAccessResearch

It’s #WorldRefugeeDay. In 2023 alone, 1 in 4 people seeking protection in the EU were children, fleeing war, hunger, forced marriage, poverty, and climate disasters. These children face unimaginable dangers, and their hopes for a better future are often met with inhumanity. We call on the EU to create a more compassionate Europe. It is crucial to eliminate violence at the borders by implementing an independent and effective border monitoring mechanism and adopting a child-friendly approach to migration management. Ensuring a safer, more humane future for these vulnerable children is crucial.
