Last week, I attended the Hungarian British Business Alliance (HBBA) InvestFest, a dynamic event that brought together entrepreneurs, investors, and industry experts to foster meaningful connections and insightful discussions. Here are my four key takeaways: 1. Investor Focus: Investors are keen on startups that combine innovation with a clear path to sustainable impact. Tailoring pitches to highlight long-term value is essential. 2. Alternative Funding Insights: The panel on “The Future of Finance” shed light on underutilised public funding options and strategies for scaling in the UK, particularly leveraging schemes like EIS. 3. Goal Setting for Success: Peter Wilcock (MBA)'s talk reinforced the importance of clear, actionable goals paired with resilience and adaptability in the entrepreneurial journey. 4. Engagement Strategies: Reverse pitching flipped the narrative, providing valuable insights into how investors think and what they prioritise, helping refine how startups approach them. Had the privilege of speaking at IBA’s #entrepreneurconnect on the role of angel investors in cultivating entrepreneurship among students. The discussion was thought-provoking, and I shared a few points I believe are vital for both aspiring entrepreneurs and angel investors: - Angel investment is more than just a check. True angel investors commit their time, energy, and effort to help entrepreneurs transform ideas into opportunities and, eventually, into sustainable enterprises. - Entrepreneurs must have skin in the game and a deep passion for the problems they aim to solve. Entrepreneurship demands grit and unwavering belief. Angel investors play a crucial role in ensuring founders don’t give up, especially during the toughest times. - There’s a fine line between being an angel investor and a predator. It’s a boundary that should never be crossed. The panel discussion was animated yet engaging, thanks to my fellow panelists Nadeem Shaikh, Darakhshan Sheikh Vohra, Amin 🚀, Sennen Desouza and our moderator Mohammad Sohaib Saleem who asked some intriguing and thought provoking questions.
