Ready to present the main findings from the Association of Nordic Engineers (ANE) new report: Reclaiming Europe’s Edge: Competitiveness through STEM Talent at the Hungarian STEM platform conference at the technical university of Budapest. My key messages will be: ✔️ STEM Talent is Crucial for EU Competitiveness: The EU needs to prioritise STEM talent. Coherent policy measures are urgently needed to place STEM at the core of Europe’s competitiveness agenda. Without STEM professionals the competitiveness compass will experience navigation failure. ✔️ There is a need for a European STEM Strategy: Viewing STEM competencies solely as education issues is insufficient. A cross-sectoral European approach is needed, with high-level political prioritisation and regular monitoring. A participatory governance structure is also necessary to anticipate skills and forecast trends. ✔️Policy Recommendations: We propose concrete solutions for policymakers, including integrating STEM competencies into discussions on technological development and strategic autonomy at the higher EU political level. STEM should be a regular reporting topic in the European Semester. ✔️Funding for Research Infrastructure: Europe needs to prioritise investments in research infrastructure and state-of-the-art facilities, focusing on technologies for global leadership and security. Harmonising efforts across member states will create a more efficient research ecosystem. ✔️ Future of Europe’s Industrial Business: The next EU research and innovation framework should prioritise high-tech areas and support the entire knowledge value chain. A new funding instrument, similar to the NATO-backed venture capital fund, could be beneficial. Simplifying IPR rules will support innovation in SMEs and startups. Addressing regulatory inconsistencies in the Single Market is crucial to attract investments and retain top talent. 💡 You can download the report: https://lnkd.in/d5zWuU_B and recommendations: https://lnkd.in/d5eM5naX #competitiveness #STEMtalent #STEMcompetencies #CompetitivenessCompass #EU #STEMstrategy #StrategicAutonomy Johan Ståhl Joep Bresser EU STEM Coalition ENGINEERS EUROPE Zoltan Marton Roxana Minzatu HANNE SHAPIRO Jari Jokinen Ulrika Lindstrand Laura Klitgaard Kjetil Lein Dr. Svana Helen Björnsdóttir

Neither does the pact explicitly acknowledge the critical role of universities in contributing to breakthroughs in science, technology and innovation or their vital work in social sciences, which is critical to changing human behaviour and solving local and global challenges. The important role of international partnerships in higher education and research to address inequality and support capacity building is largely missing...

Dear Colleagues, Mentors, and Friends, I am a PhD student in Education at the University of Cambridge, originally from a small town in China and the first in my family to attend university. Growing up in a single-parent household with an annual income of less than £7,000, I never imagined I would one day study at one of the world’s leading institutions. This journey has been a dream built on perseverance, hard work, and the generous guidance of many mentors and friends. My research focuses on the experiences of disadvantaged international students—those from non-middle-class backgrounds—who, like me, face systemic barriers in accessing higher education. I aim to explore their struggles, resilience, and strategies for navigating inequitable global education systems. However, I now find myself facing a challenge I feared the most: the financial burden of self-funding my PhD is simply unsustainable. International tuition fees are three times higher than those for domestic students, and while I’ve worked tirelessly to save for my studies, it has become clear that without external support, I cannot continue. Through conversations with other self-funded students, I’ve realized something heartbreaking: most receive substantial family support, and securing scholarships post-enrollment is nearly impossible. This leaves me grappling with a stark reality: the very system I’m studying—the inequities in higher education—is now forcing me to question whether I can tell the stories I am so passionate about. Inspired by Professor Catherine Montgomery's sharing on the comparative UK PhD theses about China and India at the end of #ChinaHEConference2024, I further question the very structure of the global knowledge production system why is it that we—students from former colonies, developing countries, or the Global South—are required to pay exorbitant tuition fees to study in developed countries, often former colonial powers? So I am at a crossroads. I am considering withdrawing from my current program and reapplying for a fully funded PhD position in 2025, whether at Cambridge or elsewhere. This is not an easy decision, but it reflects my commitment to continuing this research and amplifying the voices of disadvantaged students who, like me, are navigating these barriers. I write to you, my network, in search of guidance: Are there scholarships or funding opportunities available to currently enrolled international students in similar situations? Do you know of institutions recruiting fully funded PhD candidates in related fields? Or perhaps you have advice on how I might navigate this moment? As someone who has been blessed with incredible mentors and friends throughout my journey, I am deeply grateful for this community. Your insights, advice, or even words of encouragement would mean the world to me as I work toward finding a way forward. Thank you for taking the time to read my story and for any guidance you can share. Warm regards, Eve

In August I defended my master thesis “Younger generation’s seat at the table: On including youth perspectives in Just Transition in Upper Silesia, Poland” and I’m happy to share that I have graduated from KU Leuven with Magna Cum Laude! My thesis looked at whether young people’s needs and perspectives are included in the just transition in Upper Silesia, but also examined what is the relation between climate urgency and just transition – looking especially at young people’s perspectives of urgency. I would like to use this occasion to share some insights from my thesis research. In a nutshell, the main conclusion of my work shows that unfortunately, young people are poorly included in just transition in the region. Just to mention a few findings, some of the problems include: ➡️ unequal treatment of young individuals, ➡️ lack of trust from young people towards local authorities, and vice versa, ➡️ limited access to funds or planning related to the just transition. ➡️ weak communication about the process, that relies on outdated communication sources, and uses formal language that might be unfamiliar to young people. In summary, what can be done? 1️⃣ Promote Awareness - highlight that the just transition is already underway and explain its principles and the upcoming changes in Silesia. 2️⃣ Target Young Audiences - utilize media channels that effectively reach young people. 3️⃣ Youth Working Group - establish a youth working group dedicated to the just transition in the region. 4️⃣ Build Trust - foster trust between politicians and young individuals. Next year, further projects will be planned under the Just Transition Fund (if the funds are secured in the EU budget for 2028-2034). Therefore, it’s vital for young people to have access to information about these plans and to be consulted in these projects, as these changes largely impact future generations. Thank you to my interviewees, my thesis supervisor Katrien Pype, and my internship host Park Naukowo-Technologiczny Euro-Centrum. I also want to thank my colleagues at Centre for Systems Solutions (CRS) for allowing me to have flexible work time, while studying. #SprawiedliwaTransformacja #JustTransition
