More solid research from Jaclyn Schildkraut - This paper clearly recognizes what I think is the primary variable in the end impact of preparedness programs - the quality of the delivery, training or exercises. The push to eliminate these types of activities because they are traumatizing to students is a classic example of "garbage in, garbage out." Properly designed and conducted training and exercises, especially for sensitive subjects like violence in schools, provide value. Poorly designed and conducted training and exercises do nothing but make the situation worse.
Excited to share that we (Amanda Nickerson, Matt Vogel, and Abbie Finnerty, and I) have new research out today! Our study explores the relationship between participation in lockdown drills, students' exposure to violence, and perceived safety and preparedness. Interestingly, we find that exposure to violence adversely affects students' perceptions of school safety, but that these negative effects actually may be tempered / lessened by participation in drills. Out now in the Journal of School Violence - 50 free reads at the link below, or you are welcome to message me for a copy. https://lnkd.in/eaW4wBfQ
