Let’s use this day to: Advocate for stronger protection measures for educational facilities. Support initiatives that provide safe learning spaces for students in conflict zones. Raise awareness about the impact of attacks on education and the importance of international solidarity. We must remember that education is a universal human right and that everyone, even during conflict, deserves access to a safe learning environment. According to the Global Coalition to Protect Education from Attack, there were nearly 6,000 reported attacks on education in 2022 and 2023, harming over 10,000 students and educators. This is unacceptable. We must do everything we can to protect our schools, students, and educators from violence. The Global Campaign for Education calls on all governments to adopt the Safe Schools Declaration, ensuring that schools are safe zones free from violence. On the occasion of the 5th International Day to #ProtectEducationfromAttack, I was honoured to join a roundtable convened by the Global Campaign for Education (GCE) and share some thoughts on steps both forward and back since the founding of the Global Coalition to Protect Education from Attack nearly 15 years ago: 📊 There now is data, but this sadly shows significant and growing numbers of attacks on education. 📜 Recognition of the challenge, with the creation of the #SafeSchoolsDeclaration and endorsement by 120 countries, but is not always followed by implementation. 💵 Humanitarian funding to education has grown over the years, but the education part of United Nations OCHA's Global Humanitarian Overview 2024 shows a $613 million decrease (or 26%) from the previous year. Can a different story be told in the coming years?
