Despite a dramatic increase in government spending, it's no secret that homelessness has escalated to crisis levels in cities and towns across the country. The holidays are a common time to think about helping the homeless, but it’s important to remember that this crisis doesn’t suddenly stop when the holidays are over. Our mission, with our work supporting Beyond Homeless, is to address the root cause of homelessness, through individualized support that helps move people off the streets for good. Will you join us this holiday season in supporting Beyond Homeless? https://buff.ly/3D5fBdK

Today is World Homeless Day. My reflection today is that while it’s absolutely essential that we all work together to solve our homeless and housing insecurity crisis, we must also remember that there is a need to alleviate suffering as we work towards solutions. Perhaps this goes without saying, but with such intense (and necessary) focus on ending homelessness, I worry that alleviating suffering “along the way” is downplayed—or worse seen by some as “enabling.” Quite the contrary. Blanchet House & Farm’s services help prepare people for housing solutions when they become available. And by alleviating suffering in the moment through meals and other supports, we not only tend to the suffering of fellow humans, we also communicate to others that they are worthy of compassion and the tender mercies we provide. By doing so with dignity and without judgment, we promote hope that things can be better. Which is essential if we’re going to solve for homelessness.

Homeless people need more than a house. They need something money can't buy https://lnkd.in/gFEkCmEd Churches and other faith-based organizations are often well-equipped to provide the type of nurturing environment that focuses on restoring whole beings. When organizations like these work hand-in-hand with the state, we are more likely to get at the root causes of what leads to sustained homelessness and address the pain and trauma that leads victims into a downward spiral. A community that cares is the best recipe for solving this crisis. I know it works, because I’ve seen it work time and time again. It turns out that homelessness is frequently the byproduct of years of destructive habits and patterns that have been repeatedly reinforced. What’s needed are new habits and a community that lovingly holds people accountable in their pursuit of a better life. That’s what thoughtful leaders on this issue are starting to put into practice. And that gives me hope. Hope for the people of our city that have been hopeless for far too long.

“Becoming homeless is a contingent event . . . not one that’s inevitable or irreversible.” Don’t miss our National President John Berry’s latest op-ed on SVdP’s groundbreaking solutions to the nation’s homelessness crisis. https://ow.ly/i5B450RvOJX It’s painful to recognize that neighbors often become homeless simply because of temporary money shortfalls. But it’s also inspiring — because it means that PREVENTING homelessness is often as easy as giving one-time assistance to pay a bill or make rent. As President Berry details in his article, SVdP chapters around the country run programs that are producing amazing results in preventing homelessness in their communities. He writes: “As more Americans realize the severity of our homelessness crisis, we have a tremendous opportunity to work together to restore stability and dignity to neighbors living on the brink.” To learn more about how you can join this lifesaving work, visit https://ow.ly/Z1lJ50RvOJU

Life is a tapestry woven from a series of moments and decisions, some conscious and others shaped by circumstances beyond our control. Each choice we make, whether we realize it or not, propels us along a unique path—sometimes leading us to places of joy and fulfillment, while at other times, to seemingly insurmountable challenges. As a sociologist, I often ponder the social dynamics that contribute to the painful reality of familial disconnection, particularly in the case of individuals who find themselves homeless. What drives a family to forget a loved one who, through a series of unfortunate events, ends up living on the streets? It’s a complex interplay of societal pressures, stigma, and the often-invisible barriers that separate us from those we care about. Many factors come into play: mental health issues, addiction, economic hardship, and systemic failures can alienate individuals, creating a chasm that feels impossible to bridge. Families might grapple with shame, fear, or a sense of helplessness, leading them to distance themselves rather than offer support. In the end, these moments of decision—whether to reach out or withdraw—can have lasting implications, shaping lives and relationships in profound ways. Recognizing the humanity in each moment and decision is crucial. It reminds us of our shared responsibility to foster connection and compassion, especially for those on the margins of society. Thank you to all that dedicated their lifes to make sure no one is forgotten when alive Associação CAIS 🙏🙏
While we walked 150km in 5 days to the Olympics in Paris for 150 million homeless people, my son learned about life and death along his journey through the French countryside. He found a dead hare that still looked alive on the side of the road and his heart was broken. I stopped to console him and let him know that death was a part of life and we must learn how to celebrate life while we are alive as well as death when others pass. Some homeless people are remembered when they die, but forgotten while they live, and many go unnoticed in life and death. We must do better as a society to celebrate both moments as we strive to end homelessness. In honor of the hare’s life and all of the homeless people who do not receive the love and respect they deserve in life and death, we symbolically placed a flower over it. As professionals, we need to learn how to educate our children through nature to make our cities a better place to live in. #HomelessEntrepreneur #TheGreatWalk

DO YOU KNOW? When things get tough, it's important to take a step back, breathe, and break the problem down into smaller parts. Focus on what you can control and take small, manageable steps towards finding a solution." Now, let's apply this nugget to a societal challenge, like homelessness: "When we see people struggling with homelessness, it's easy to feel overwhelmed by the enormity of the issue. Instead of feeling helpless, we can break it down. We might not be able to solve homelessness for everyone, but we can focus on what we can do, like supporting local shelters, volunteering time or resources, or advocating for policies that provide affordable housing and support services. By taking small steps together, we can make a big difference in the lives of those experiencing homelessness." #30daysbrandingchallengewithTonye #brandasacounsellor #counsellorsrock

A recent look inside a former hotel in Tempe, now transformed into a shelter for the homeless community, highlights the innovative steps being taken to address homelessness in Arizona. This shelter offers not just a roof over people’s heads but also comprehensive services to help individuals transition toward stability and self-sufficiency. Tempe’s repurposed hotel includes private rooms and essential wraparound services, providing a dignified and supportive environment for residents. These services range from mental health care to job training, empowering individuals to rebuild their lives. The goal is not just to provide temporary relief but to create a lasting impact by addressing the root causes of homelessness. The success of this initiative underscores the importance of safe, supportive spaces for those in need. Creating environments where people can access resources, regain confidence, and take steps toward independence is crucial to solving the homelessness crisis. At A New Leaf, we champion innovative solutions like this one that prioritize dignity and opportunity. By working together as a community, we can bring meaningful change and offer hope to those experiencing homelessness. https://lnkd.in/g5eYJXZe

The National Alliance to End Homelessness recently released the results of new public opinion poll about how Americans view homelessness. Of the many findings, direct service providers and nonprofit organizations are perceived to be among the most trusted to handle the work that builds solutions for homelessness, but there is a recognition that these organizations don't have enough resources. Given that homelessness in the United States is currently at the highest levels in the history of record keeping by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, organizations like CaringWorks are more critical than ever in implementing proven solutions to end homelessness. Read the summary of the opinion poll at https://rebrand.ly/rqcwyge, and learn how you can be part of the solution to end homelessness by supporting CaringWorks at caringworksinc.org. #endhomelessness #caringworks

Last night, I swapped the comfort of my bed for a sleeping bag on the cold concrete as part of #centrepoint's Sleep Out event. CentrePoint is an incredible charity working with young people aged 16-25 who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. This experience gave me just a tiny glimpse into the harsh realities faced by so many young people in the UK. What was the hardest part? The cold. The noise. The feeling of vulnerability. Even knowing I was in a safe and organised environment, it was unsettling. It made me reflect deeply on how different it must feel for young people who face this uncertainty every night. What struck me the most? At the event, we learned about the complex factors that lead to homelessness. These can include family breakdowns, leaving care, escaping abuse, or simply being dealt an unfair hand in life. One fact stood out to me: homelessness isn’t just about not having a roof over your head, it’s about losing opportunities for education, employment, and stability. The cycle can feel impossible to break without support. How can you help? Homelessness is an issue we can all play a part in addressing. Please consider donating to my fundraising page https://lnkd.in/e-ED9sWd. Your contribution, no matter how small, can help CentrePoint provide the support young people need to turn their lives around. Together, we can make a difference.
