🌊 Navigating Storms: Lessons from a Gulf Coast Professional 🌊 Early this July, just before Hurricane Beryl hit land, I had a great conversation with a remarkable professional who has faced many figurative and literal storms. His experiences on the Gulf Coast profoundly impacted me, especially his insights into Contingency Plans, Disaster Recovery, and Business Continuity. When I mentioned that my business partner and I would be driving into the storm later that night, he shared an unforgettable story. He once had to make a split-second decision to avoid high water, which was crucial for his safety. His story highlighted how many decisions are planned through strong risk assessments, while some must be made on the spot. Reflecting on this, I was reminded of Mike Tyson's quote: "Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth." This conversation emphasized the importance of strong decision-making abilities and the value of a team. However, this post isn't about him or me; it's about the decisions we face daily. Making a decision is not always easy, and there's a lot to consider when there is time. Experience, patience, and understanding are invaluable traits. When you're not with your team, you're alone, and do the best with what you have. LEADERSHIP ACTUALLY: Lessons from a Hurricane: Lesson 6 My husband and I recently returned from our trip to Jamaica having experienced our first Category 4 Hurricane – Hurricane Beryl. I’m happy to say that everyone at the resort was safe, but it was truly a learning experience in many ways. I’ve been spending the past few weeks discussing what I learned from a leadership perspective. Visible leadership, expectation setting, good communication, having an effective emergency plan and the ability to flex were the first five lessons reviewed. I thought I only had one more topic to highlight in my “Lessons from a Hurricane” series, but my husband reminded me of another important learning we observed – how to deal with unhappy people. It was hard for us to believe some of the behavior we saw from guests at the resort. While rare, we saw a guest walking around demanding that someone help him heat up his food (when we had no power!). Another instance occurred at the front desk with a couple demanding that housekeeping clean their room despite a skeleton crew trying to feed hundreds of people. Even in trying times, human behavior sometimes defies understanding. Staff were prepared for this – their customer service never wavered as they listened to these people with grace and understanding, explaining plans for how these requests could be met as soon as resources allowed them to move away from emergency operations. It was a true lesson in preparing a team to provide a great experience even under extreme circumstances! #leadership #experience #sandalssouthcoast
