🌊 Navigating Storms: Lessons from a Gulf Coast Professional 🌊
Early this July, just before Hurricane Beryl hit land, I had a great conversation with a remarkable professional who has faced many figurative and literal storms. His experiences on the Gulf Coast profoundly impacted me, especially his insights into Contingency Plans, Disaster Recovery, and Business Continuity. (The image I'm including in this post shows a flooded park in Houston, Texas during Hurricane Harvey.)
When I mentioned that my business partner and I would be driving into the storm later that night, he shared an unforgettable story. He once had to make a split-second decision to avoid high water, which was crucial for his safety. His story highlighted how many decisions are planned through strong risk assessments, while some must be made on the spot.
Reflecting on this, I was reminded of Mike Tyson's quote: "Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth."
This conversation emphasized the importance of strong decision-making abilities and the value of a team.
However, this post isn't about him or me; it's about the decisions we face daily. Making a decision is not always easy, and there's a lot to consider when there is time. Experience, patience, and understanding are invaluable traits.
When you're not with your team, you're alone, and do the best with what you have.
What are some of the toughest decisions you've had to make on the spot?
