On our recent trip to Cooperstown, I was reminded of how impactful youth sports can be. Every community, every child, and every family should have access to these opportunities across our country. It shouldn’t just be for those who have the means to travel for tournaments. We need to ensure these experiences are available and accessible to everyone. This includes proactively addressing barriers that low-income families face in participating in youth sports, so that all kids can benefit from these incredible opportunities. Communities should also consider leveraging these facilities for renewable energy and electric vehicle deployment. By integrating these elements, we can enhance the sustainability and accessibility of our sports infrastructure, ensuring it serves the community in multiple beneficial ways. #YouthSports #CommunityInfrastructure #Accessibility #EconomicDevelopment #EnvironmentalResilience #RenewableEnergy #CommunityBenefits

Happy infographic Tuesday. Today’s infographic highlights how positive migration has a huge contribution to the UK. The recent race riots that have blighted the UK over the last three weeks or so have been shocking and disturbing for many people, especially for those of us who are from racially minoritised backgrounds. I do not stand for the hateful and inaccurate rhetoric that has been held by individuals, organisations (including political parties and the press) and systems. As a child of immigrants, I can’t say I am surprised by the language, attitudes and behaviour that I have seen, but nonetheless, it’s awful to see that in my lifetime things are still the same. Even though people were galvanised to oppose hateful and harmful behaviours, it doesn’t mean we have moved on as a nation or as a world. In the history of the UK, race riots have been seen since the 12th century. In 1312, there were race riots against Flemish weavers who came to the UK to seek work. In 1381 there was a Peasants' Revolt where foreigners were attacked. There were anti-Italian uprisings in 1456/7 and in 1517 a mob of 1000 people in London attacked anyone that looked foreign. There were also the 1919 race riots 1958 Nottinghill race riots. In the last 40 years, there have been riots about race all over the UK, including St Paul's riot (1980), the Moss Side riot (1981), the Handsworth Riots (1985), and the Brixton Riots (1985). In conclusion, migration’s contribution to the UK is vast, and I don't think the country would be where it is now if it wasn't for the centuries of migration it has had. We all need to be careful and aware of the information we consume, how we think about others, and how we talk about others to create a more inclusive and equitable society. On this Earth Day, let's journey back to 1970, where diverse crowds across the nation, from New York to California, stood united for the planet. From students in St. Louis marching against air pollution, to peaceful demonstrators in Philadelphia, and vibrant rallies in Boston and California, each image tells a story of activism and hope. The presence of gas masks symbolized the fight against the smog blanketing our industrial cities, while energetic rallies from coast to coast captured the beginnings of a global movement. 🌎 In Milwaukee, residents honored the vision of Earth Day's founder, Senator Gaylord Nelson, with protests, musical performances, and teach-ins. Some made rafts and paddled down the Milwaukee River. 🌎Nipher Junior High in Missouri marked the day with student protests, reflecting a wider local effort filled with teach-ins on pollution. 🌎Philadelphia's Earth Week culminated in a grand gathering of 7,000 people, featuring speeches by Ralph Nader and performances from the cast of Hair, echoing the era's cultural zeitgeist. 🌎In New York City, even the youngest citizens, like students from the Convent of the Sacred Heart School, took brooms to Union Square, literally cleaning up their environment. 🌎Behind it all, Denis Hayes, a visionary student from Harvard, coordinated these nationwide teach-ins, cementing Earth Day as a pivotal moment in environmental advocacy. These historic moments remind us that change starts with us. This year, as we reflect on the lessons from the past, let's also look forward to the future we are building together. VERY relevant for our industry. - Mass-participation events that are made accessible being provided free and which can effectively engage large numbers of individuals, groups and families in being active in a social setting. - Mass events have been effective in increasing walking and cycling. This includes the Ciclovia programme, implemented successfully to mass audiences in complex urban settings. - Events such as car-free-days and road races / mass walks can attract large participation numbers while also setting an advocacy agenda around active mobility and attracting media attention.
