AquaBounty Announces Plans to Cease Fish Farming Operations. If this company had been raising non GMO salmon in land-based facility, we would have been behind it. Genetically engineered organisms can have unintended impacts on wild species and ecosystems that could change Nature forever. While there is a much lower risk of escapes with land based facilities, all it takes is one non-sterile fish or fertilized egg to end up in the wrong place. In Canada, already at-risk populations of Atlantic Salmon could be outcompeted for food, or if interbreeding were to occur, be fundamentally changed.
