Prof. Mario Draghi's speech was definitely one of the highlights of the La Hulpe Conference on the future of the European Pillar of Social Rights, back in April: https://lnkd.in/eENjnreN Accused of not being sensitive enough to social and environmental concerns [as per the initial batch of reactions], he is probably one of the boldest active voices advocating for super-partes, context-aware radical discontinuities, and informed by a spirit most resembling a genuinely European grand strategy. Perhaps most illustrative, he then singled out governance inadequacies, referring among others to the paradoxically dire need for Treaty change: "we cannot afford the luxury of waiting for the next reform of the Treaties". So no time to sharpen our saw with so much for us to cut down. Earlier today, this existential caveat came out even more blatantly put: "Procrastination has only produced slower growth, and it has certainly achieved no more consensus. [...] We have reached the point where, without action, we will have to either compromise our welfare, our environment or our freedom." How was it? People, profit, Planet... [Painful throwback to the sequence of Lisbon, Growth and Jobs, Europe 2020, European Green Deal... Is there anyone counting the unfulfilled promises, anyone left to be held accountable?] Draghi's report and its warnings better be paid heed of. Can't wait to see if and where they are operationally taken on board.
