Ten years ago, my left lung ruptured and collapsed inside my chest while I was serving as an Officer Cadet in the Army, and it nearly killed me. I've spent every day since trying to reconcile that close brush with death, and understand why despite that, I have continued gambling with ever-increasing levels of risk - starting with ignoring sound medical advice and rejoining officer training, finally commissioning in 2016. Here I've published my attempt to collect the last decade's worth of thoughts into this essay centered around one realization: we're all on borrowed time, and we don't have nearly as much of it as we think, so it's on us to over-leverage whatever we do have to build great things. Or in other words, smoke 'em if you got 'em, because you won't have 'em forever (ironic because my lung injury means I'm on a lifetime smoking ban). I don't often write or share these sorts of personal essays. But as we approach the 3-year anniversary of yukun and I founding Charter, I wanted to share more on why we do this. Because there's nothing in the world that can stop us, short of death itself. And you can believe that guarantee because I've been there, done that, and I'm still kicking.
