🚨 Global Supply Chain Challenges: Rolls-Royce's Trent 1000 Bottleneck 🚨 Having one of my flights recently cancelled due to this issue, I thought I'd create a post to make others aware of these events. Rolls-Royce is facing major delays in servicing its Trent 1000 engines, used in Boeing 787 Dreamliner's ✈️. Airlines are struggling with grounded aircraft due to extended maintenance times. So, what's causing this? 🔧 The Causes: 1️⃣ Durability issues with the turbine blades have led to more frequent inspections. 2️⃣ Supply chain disruptions have made sourcing critical parts harder. 3️⃣ Skilled personnel shortages in engineering & maintenance are slowing down repairs. ⏳ How long will this last? Experts predict the issue will take 12-18 months to resolve. Rolls-Royce is working to address the bottlenecks, but without more skilled engineers and technicians, delays may continue. 👷♂️ Workforce development is key. GKN Aerospace has signed a decade-long agreement with Safran Aircraft Engines to expand its support for the LEAP engines. The contract covers new shafts and spare part production for the Leap 1A variant for the Airbus A320neo aircraft, with the expectation to produce similar components for the LEAP 1B for the Boeing 737-MAX aircraft in the future. Through this contract GKN will support Safran with its significant future demand and will start up new Shaft production at GKN Aerospace’s global centre of excellence in Kongsberg, Norway. The first shafts are expected to be delivered from GKN Norway to Paris in the second half of 2024. GKN Aerospace and Safran have worked together closely for more than 35 years, with long-term partnerships in place for the industry-leading CFM56 and GE90 engines, as well as on the next-generation RISE technology development program. Alexander Andersson, senior vice president of GKN Aerospace’s Engines business, said: “This is a significant agreement and another important milestone in our partnership with Safran. The Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 is a high-bypass turbofan engine produced by Rolls-Royce, an iteration of the Trent family powering exclusively the Airbus A330neo. Compared to the A330's Trent 700, the 68,000–72,000 lbf (300–320 kN) engine doubles the bypass ratio to 10:1 and halves emitted noise. Pressure ratio is increased to 50:1, and it has a 112 in (280 cm) fan and a bleed air system. Fuel consumption is improved by 11%.

Griffith of Rolls-Royce Royce pitched this wild Mach-2 concept, that aimed to tackle 2x highly complex engineering challenges at once. #Supersonic speed and #VTOL. The design was submitted to the Supersonic Transport Aircraft Committee (STAC) around 1958 but, like many bold proposals of the era, it ultimately failed to progress beyond the concept stage. Today, the concepts of VTOL, supersonic passenger transport and blended wings are back in the limelight, but it remains unlikely that we will see anything like the RR Griffith concept. 68 engines : 44 passengers. An unusual ratio and it's somewhat unlikely the economics would work. The post-war era was a golden era for radical innovation, particularly in aviation, and fast forward to today, it feels like we are in another golden era. The innovation and spirit of A.A.
