Yes, the photo didn't turn out great... the lighting... But! The decisions made following it were very significant! I insist that children are intelligent, and with the right atmosphere, a quality environment, supportive parents who speak to their children at eye level and mediate what's happening correctly, they can grow, develop, and achieve great things. Recently, I had the opportunity to talk about Dr. Yotam Sherf... First, let me introduce him and then explain why such a person is important for the system and the good news. Dr. Yotam Sherf, a researcher in black holes and gravitational waves, joins the faculty of Bareket Academy! Yotam, who holds a PhD in Theoretical Physics from Ben-Gurion University and is a postdoctoral researcher in the Astrophysics Department at the Max Planck Institute in Germany, will join Bareket Academy's faculty. He will teach courses in astrophysics, the Big Bang, space technologies, and the universe. These fields are considered critical for developing today's children who will become future Israeli researchers and scientists exploring the universe, its laws, and functions. In our meeting, I explained to Yotam that "The State of Israel must train the next generation of space technology experts, among other things, to develop the tools essential for securing its future as a technological superpower, capable of protecting its territories and national interests through these technologies." Dr. Yotam Sherf is a leading researcher in black holes and gravitational waves. Throughout his career, Yotam has served as a teaching assistant and lecturer at Ben-Gurion University and delivered popular science lectures to high school students to encourage science studies. Currently, he is researching questions like "What's inside a black hole?" and "What can mysterious black holes teach us about the quantum world?" Dr. Sherf joins the faculty because he is vital and crucial for the present and future generation of Israel, who will lead us to become a leading technological superpower. The honor is all ours! #PKU alumnus Zhang Yahui is among those chosen for the 2024 Sloan Research Fellowships. Zhang obtained his B.S. in Physics from PKU and his Ph.D. in Physics from MIT and then he was a postdoc scholar at Harvard University. He joined the Department of Physics and Astronomy at JHU as an assistant professor in 2022. Zhang is working on condensed matter theory with a focus on strongly correlated physics. #PKUAlumni #SloanFellow

The time until a star known as Betelgeuse explodes into a supernova has been debated in literature by the scientific community. This was based on the brightening and dimming of the star. Now, recent research -- that included the work of a University of Wyoming faculty member -- suggests the pulsing starlight potentially comes from a companion star, dubbed “Betelbuddy.” “This paper proposes a companion -- either a star or stellar-like object -- to Betelgeuse, meaning Betelgeuse is a binary system. We call this alpha Orionis B (Betelgeuse is properly known as Alpha Orionis), or ‘BetelBuddy’ colloquially,” says Meridith Joyce, an assistant professor in UW’s Department of Physics and Astronomy. “The companion has never been detected observationally, but we know, from Betelgeuse’s pulsational behavior, that it must exist. The Case for Open Access and Preprints in Research As someone working in High Energy Physics (HEP), Astrophysics & Astronomy (A&A), and General Relativity (GR), I’ve seen firsthand how vital preprint repositories like arXiv(https://arxiv.org/) have been. They democratize access to cutting-edge research. But what about older articles or works from researchers who are no longer active? For those, we often end up relying on emails to colleagues at top-tier institutes—a stark reminder of the inequities in research access across institutions. This divide is something we must address. One way forward is to embrace innovative publishing models like The Open Journal of Astrophysics(https://astro.theoj.org/), which exemplifies how open access can evolve. We need to support arXiv and encourage every researcher to upload preprints. If universities made it mandatory to share a preprint version of accepted manuscripts, we could solve a significant part of the access challenge. The debates over metrics like h-index and impact factor will likely continue, but true progress in science comes from fostering openness and collaboration—championed by eccentric, creative minds pushing boundaries.
