It was a pleasure to facilitate a session on Wellcome Trust’s policy and influencing work at today’s #WellcomeSummit, with Megan Challis, Jeremy Knox and Martin Smith. We talked about why a science organisation like Wellcome engages with politics and how we give voice to the importance of investing in science to address big challenges.

Join me and be part of a global policy community conversation. Let's talk about the evolving nature of policymaking work on March 27 with Apolitical. I will be sharing my thoughts and observations unpacking adaptive policymaking. Most of us do not operate in "special sandbox projects", so what. I am looking forward to connect our collective wisdom, relate with each other, share aspirations for better futures, and learn together. #policymaking #adaptivepolicies #policydesign #policyimplementation #guidance #humancenteredresearch

Institute for Citizens & Scholars launched the series “Preamble” to hear from diverse leaders—particularly those you might not expect—about their ideas for shaping a more perfect Union. Baratunde Thurston's interview with Rajiv V. taps into something simple but deeply meaningful. If we take “citizen” as a verb and not a noun, it means showing up. It means taking action. “It means committing to the collective, not just individual self, that we see ourselves as part of something greater than just ourselves and our families.” Take a look. https://lnkd.in/gduY2Xwt

Great to speak with Robert Ede, former Special Adviser to the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, to get his thoughts on what gets policy unstuck. His key points: 1️⃣ Political strategy matters. If you're going to put the work into coming up with new policy ideas, bake into that process how you're going to execute the communications and advocacy work to make that idea a reality. The political strategy associated with a policy idea cannot be an afterthought. 2️⃣ Be careful how you campaign. There's an understanding that external organisations will hold a government to account, but that needs to be done in such a way that doesn't damage the ability to work together. Surprising politicians with a public campaign can create a situation where they perceive the campaign as a personal vendetta... not good. 3️⃣ Think about your messengers. If you can get senior business leaders to tell a simple story (personally- not as a corporate viewpoint) on why a particular policy proposal from government is a bad idea, it can be a very effective way of encouraging a rethink. There has been a lot of discussion on the Supreme Court’s decision in Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo, which overturned Chevron v. National Resources Defense Council and the presumptive deference that federal courts have been applying to administrative agencies for the last 40 years. At the same time, Congress continues to plow forward on proposed bills to oversee PE investments in health care (see “The Health Over Wealth Act” introduced by Senator Ed Markey on April 3, 2024 and “The Corporate Crimes Against Health Care Act” introduced by Senator Elizabeth Warren on June 11, 2024). While the viability of these bills remains to be seen, it is clear that new laws in this space empowering HHS, DOJ, or other federal agencies to promulgate new rules will need to be finely-tuned or risk facing greater scrutiny post-Loper Bright. #HCTransactionLaws #LoperBright #PEInvestments

Thank you for tuning into our Inaugural Frontline Conversations Symposium! This was not just an event, but a significant milestone in our journey toward fostering meaningful policy dialogues. Frontline Conversations is our platform to facilitate and shape conversations around public policy issues. Our aim is to create a vehicle for policy, economic and political conversations that matter. It is no doubt from the discussions at the Symposium that NEDLAC as a body empowered by statute to bring stakeholders together around the table to review and make inputs into policy and legislation, should reclaim its status in the public policy making architecture of our country. In a field that can be as confusing and partisan as our public policy landscape, the body has an important role to play to narrow differences between sectors of our society. As we stake our claim in the public policy space, we are excited about the future insights and discussions we are going to have on our platform. Here’s to many more meaningful conversations ahead! #FrontlineConversations #FrontlineAfricaConversations
