This is a very timely challenge - exactly the kind of thinking national governments should be engaged in. There is a direct benefit that could be accrued, in making research easier, but there is also a ton of spill over benefits that would come out of adopting work like this - particularly as AI looms larger and larger.

A cross government National Data Library was a key commitment of the Labour manifesto, but what should it look like? Wellcome and ESRC are looking for proposals on the technical vision and architecture for a Library that could make access to public sector data fast, transparent, secure and trustworthy. Do knowledge gaps lead to deficiencies in designing responses to disinformation? 📖 This week, we came across a literature review on responses to disinformation by a research institute at the Swedish Defence Ministry. The existing evidence sparks confidence in the use of fact-checking, corrections, and trust scores. They are effective, particularly if coming from trustworthy or renowned sources. 🧪 However, the paper also reveals that current evidence often stems from offline experiments conducted with North American or European university students. Non-students, social media users, and citizens in other regions of the world may respond differently to counter-disinformation measures than participants in these studies. ⚖️ Thus, relying exclusively on existing studies can lead to dangerous biases that impact the way we design counter-measures. As EU legislation often sets global standards, it is important to consider the 'Counter-Brussels-Effect', where these standards might not align with every region's needs. 🔎 Therefore we need more scientific research to verify what works and what does not. To do so, social media platforms must grant access to their data for independent research - also beyond the European Union, where this will be mandated under the DSA's Article 40.

The European Commission has been a trendsetter in requirements for open access to scientific peer-reviewed publications as well as for open research data and research data management. In my article for the Handbuch Repositorienmanagement I analyse the provisions and requirements as far as they regard repositories in the EU’s #Horizon2020 and the #HorizonEurope research funding programmes. In fact, repositories are a cornerstone of the open access and open data / data management requirements in both programmes, with a strengthening of these requirements in Horizon Europe. This will influence researchers and research manager requirements for repositories, even beyond the Horizon programmes. The new requirements therefore have the potential to significantly contribute to the transition towards open science if they are stringently implemented. https://lnkd.in/gxS6K8ff

When it comes to forecasting, traditional methods like VAR often rely on complex model assumptions that can lead to inaccuracies, especially in dynamic environments. Local Projections (LP) are a more flexible approach that estimates impulse responses directly and adapts better to changes in data structures. Unlike traditional methods, LP doesn't require strong assumptions about the model's structure, making it more robust and easier to implement. This flexibility allows for more accurate predictions, especially in uncertain or evolving contexts. I used this method (among others) in my master's thesis, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Miguel Bandeira (Insper), who introduced me to this approach. For those interested in a comprehensive overview of the literature on Local Projections, I recommend the recent article (below) by Oscar Jorda which offers an in-depth summary of this evolving field.
