HKCHSE is an affiliate member of the "Society for Health Administration Programs in Education" --- commonly known as SHAPE, a not-for-profit association incorporated in South Australia. Our Vice President, Dr. Fowie Ng, also serves as the Deputy Chair of SHAPE. SHAPE brings together health management academics & practitioners from Australia, New Zealand, Asia & the Pacific. It is a community of colleagues who seek to exchange ideas on education & research, learn together, support each other’s programs, recognize achievements and engage with the huge challenges that face health leaders & managers. The global surge in medical trainees interested in global health marks an unparalleled opportunity. From just eight university-based global health programs in North America in 2003 to over 40 by 2009, this rapid expansion reveals a generation eager to tackle cross-border health crises (Kerry et al., 2011). Yet, this enthusiasm must be balanced by sustainable strategies to address workforce shortages in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where 24% of the global disease burden is managed by only 3% of the world’s healthcare workforce (WHO, 2006). While high-income nations excel in advanced medical training, sustainable global health impact demands investment in local leadership. Notably, partnerships prioritizing LMIC-led initiatives strengthen health systems and enable indigenous physicians to thrive. Without this, we risk perpetuating inequities, with brain drain exacerbating local healthcare gaps. To bridge these disparities, long-term funding structures, such as public-private models or global health service corps, are crucial. The rising generation’s passion, matched with strategic investment, can redefine global health education, transforming it into a tool for equitable healthcare progress. As Vanessa B. Our new review in BMC Health Services Research explores the how rural healthcare workers across the globe upskill in digital health skills, co-authored by Priya Martin Lauren Guthrie Johnson Khor, MHCI and Clair Sullivan. Digital health workforce education and training initiatives in rural healthcare settings are scarce, largely delivered via online training, and are rarely evaluated. Current best practice points to flexible, blended (online and face-to-face) training programs that are suitably embedded with interdisciplinary, collaborative rural healthcare improvement initiatives. More research will expand the evidence base to deliver high-quality digital health education to strengthen rural healthcare delivery.
🏥Enabling the right care in the right place… Digital health offers unprecedented opportunities to improve healthcare in rural areas. To make this a reality, we need to understand best practices for digital health education and training for the rural workforce who are geographically dispersed and may struggle to access professional development. Congratulations to the authors, Sophie Witter, Shophika Regmi, Joanna Raven (whom I met recently on our way from Nagasaki to Tokyo), Jacinta Nzinga, Maria van der Merwe, my friend from the #EV4GH Walter Flores, and Lucia D'Ambruoso, on their insightful article. Teaching and learning health policy and systems research (#HPSR) is undeniably crucial for low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). However, this learning is equally essential for high-income countries (HICs). While I deeply appreciate the opportunities provided for LMICs, it’s important to recognize that similar programs should be available for HICs as well. Initially, these programs can be donor-funded to kickstart the initiative. Over time, HIC institutions can develop co-funding mechanisms and even locally funded programs. This approach can eventually extend beyond the HIC, creating a sustainable model that generates more resources and benefits other LMICs. New publication alert. I co-authored the paper below with Grace Kiarie & Lucy Gilson. It's one of those papers that is insightful and practical for anybody engaging in capacity strengthening of managers in the health system. It provides an evidence synthesis of how to incorporate work-place based learning into the day to day routines of managers in the health system and it considers how to institutionalize and sustain work-place based learning over the long term. I am so proud of myself for undertaking and completing the rigorous course on #healthcareimprovement offered by the IHI (Institute for Health Care Improvement). I particularly want to thank ACQUIRE Frontline Healthcare for sponsoring me to study the course. The course sheds light on disparities of healthcare access across the world in terms of access, cost, quality. It was interesting to learn of the stark difference in healthcare expenditure in LMICs vis a vis OECD territory. While WHO recommends a total spend of $30-40 annual minimum per person for health expenditure, the annual health spending in some LMICs is placed at $11 per person while in the OECD nations total spend per person is estimated at $3000 or more. These extremities speaks volumes with regards to lack of healthcare equity as well as the growing burden of the healthcare expenditure across the globe. The course begins by expounding on Institute of Medicine (IOM) six aims to address dimensions of #healthcareimprovement as a roadmap for designing better care. These include; safety, timeliness, effectiveness, efficiency, equitable and patient-centeredness (summarized STEEEP) This rigorous course covered 13 modules which explored various themes key to healthcare improvement including #qualityimprovement, #patientsafety and #leadership all of which offer practical tools for implementation of quality improvement such as PDSA cycle and use of tools for measurement of quality improvement such as run charts, shewhart charts, pareto charts among others. I really liked that each module/course offered very specific learning objective with relevant content. The course on leadership was particularly insightful as it offered simple tools that are easy to implement for understanding different working styles in teams. Such understanding is fundamental in achieving departmental and organizational objectives, mission and vision. A big take away for me was the theory of improvement known as System of Profound Knowledge which offers a framework for understanding the key aspects of any system you need to consider in order to bring about improvement. These include - human behaviour, appreciation of a system, theory of knowledge and variation. I recommend this course as a staple for all healthcare workers seeking to understand health systems in order to bring about quality improvement in their work environment. I’m so grateful to The African Consortium for Quality Health Improvement Research- ACQUIRE Frontline Healthcare for this invaluable learning opportunity.
