How can we combat hostility and hate speech in #sciencecommunication? We invite science communicators, press officers, and science managers from universities and research institutions to join us on October 29, 2024, for a Train-the-Trainer workshop at the Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society (HIIG) in Berlin. As researchers increasingly become targets of aggressive attacks, hate speech, and trolling campaigns—whether online or offline—our role in helping them respond effectively has never been more crucial. This training is designed for professionals who support scientists in their public communication, focusing on how to respond proactively and reactively to hostility towards science. Participating in this training will provide valuable insights and practical strategies to help researchers cope with hostility and attacks in public forums. Event Details: 📍 Date: October 29, 2024 📍 Location: HIIG, Berlin Mitte 📍 Audience: Science communicators and press officers who work closely with researchers 📍 Format: In-person, English-language 📍 Cost: No participation fees (participants are responsible for their own travel costs). This workshop is part of the KAPAZ project, led by HIIG, Scicomm-Support and the Berlin School of Public Engagement and Open Science. Funded by the VolkswagenStiftung. 🔗 You can find more information and register here (deadline: October 8): https://lnkd.in/eRqRCEyR

Just before the summer, Saxion University of Applied Sciences' School of Finance and International Business hosted the very first Dutch Human Flourishing Week. Students, researchers, industry partners, and lecturers from diverse backgrounds came together to learn, develop and grow. It was an honor to welcome Jim Ritchie-Dunham from the The University of Texas at Austin and CEO of Institute for Strategic Clarity who shared the insights from his latest work. We discussed broad economic developments, strategy and management, educational innovation, all through the lens of Human Flourishing and the Ecosynomics research. Throughout the week, we recorded several talk shows delving into current themes with Moekotte Media - Creative Agency. A key conversation took place with Stichting Young Finance Talents. A newly founded organization in which multiple regional financial advisory firms collaborate to tackle today’s challenges. Their systems approach is essential to make the individual advisory firms grow and flourish. A great example of collective action in our region which we love. More information on this initative can be found at: https://lnkd.in/ejjXQEXV In this talkshow we discussed the impact of AI on jobs in the financial sector with representatives of the companies. Their insights were both valuable and inspiring! On behalf of Christoph H., Hans Leyenaar, Marco Strijks, Sander Reinderink and Timber Haaker I would like to thank Elisa Cakici, Franz van Stuivenberg and all our speakers for their openness and meaningful contributions. In the upcoming days we will share more from Saxion University of Applied Sciences' Living Lab of Human Flourishing, part of the Saxion Sustainable Business Models lectorate. #HumanFlourishing #SystemsApproach #Collaboration #DutchFlourishingWeek #TalentDevelopment #Sustainability

‘Repair’ is fascinating; it is a practice, concept and philosophy in one. Philosophically ‘repair’ is about acknowledging mistakes and mending them, in a way that the painful process remains visible. As a concept it opens space to discuss throw-away culture, circularity and the need to acknowledge our role in it. And as a practice it can bring us back in touch with stuff and ground us. During Design Impact Transition (DIT) platform Day on June 4, colleagues will host the first ‘Academic Repair Cafe’. How can we value learning and the inherent failure as a process of repair, rather than only judge the outcome? How can we repair the contributions of universities to a fossil-linear economy and its injustices? How can academics repair broken papers or proposals? Open to all colleagues with repair questions (or offerings), and if successful we hope the start of a new tradition.
How do you repair a university? - with a repair café of course 🧵🔧 On the 4th of June, at our annual DIT Day, Dr. Sanne Koevoets will kickstart the Erasmus University Rotterdam Academic Repair Café During this kickstart event you won’t learn how to fix a broken toaster or how to mend a hole in your backpack. Instead, you’ll be invited to expand your understanding of the meaning of “repair” in an academic setting, followed by a conversation with experts on repair in educational settings, on organizing and maintaining Repair Café’s, and on repair as gateway practice to inter- or transdisciplinary and transformative collaborations. If this sound interesting to you, then come join us on the 4th of June ➡️ https://lnkd.in/gXFMBriy

🌟 Thrilled to Speak at the UKEV Life Sciences Conference 2024! 🌟 I couldn’t be more excited to join this year’s UKEV Life Sciences Conference to explore a topic at the heart of so many challenges professionals face today: Burning Bright Without Burning Out 🔥 Burnout doesn’t discriminate. Whether you’re a driven entrepreneur, a professional balancing intense demands, or a researcher working tirelessly to innovate in your field, the relentless pace can take its toll. In academia and high-pressure industries, the stakes are even higher—complex workloads, tight deadlines, and the weight of impactful outcomes often create the perfect storm for burnout. Studies show that nearly 47% of PhD students experience mental health challenges, including anxiety and depression, driven by excessive pressure. But here’s the good news: burnout isn’t inevitable. With the right tools, we can equip ourselves and our teams to achieve brilliance without sacrificing well-being. During the ECR Day at UKEV, I’ll be sharing insights on: 🔥 Recognising burnout early and understanding its cycles. 🛠️ Practical strategies to build resilience and manage stress effectively. 🚀 Leveraging Energy Leadership to maximise productivity while preserving emotional and physical energy. Burnout prevention is about more than just "self-care Sundays"—it’s about embedding sustainable practices into our daily lives, enabling us to continue doing the important, impactful work we love without losing ourselves along the way. Huge thanks to Rachel Crossland and Sonia Guarnerio for inviting me to be part of this incredible event. If you’re at UKEV 2024, let’s connect and spark meaningful conversations about how to balance brilliance with resilience. 💬 Looking for an engaging speaker to inspire and energise your team or network? Let’s chat! Together, we can build a framework for sustainable success that keeps burnout at bay. 📅 Find out more about UKEV 2024: https://shorturl.at/9jtmj 📩 Or book me for your next event: https://lnkd.in/d3b494KB #UKEV2024 #BurnoutPrevention #Resilience #LifeSciences #EnergyLeadership #ThrivingTeams #PublicSpeaking #FutureProofYourTeams #Performance #Wellbeing

“We are aware that participation in REF 2029 carries a burden and we are committed to keeping the level of effort required to participate in the exercise to manageable levels. We are particularly conscious that the introduction of new elements in the assessment carries a start-up cost, and that this can have a disproportionate effect on smaller institutions”. Good opportunity to reflect on how one enables so-called pockets of excellence across the UK HEI sector to thrive, given the resourcing implications associated with REF2029.

The research we produce helps others in academia learn from our work. Despite this, is it possible we have become too fixated on influencing scholars who are similar to us? More importantly, do we care how our work makes a difference in the worlds where we conducted our research outside of academia? If these questions have inspired your own qualitative projects, consider submitting your idea to the 16th Annual Conference hosted by our friends at TQR. Online and in-person formats for the event will be offered, with the latter to be held on campus at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, FL between March 5-6, 2025. Submit your idea, or learn more about the event, at: dedoose.info/tqr2025 Nova Southeastern University The Qualitative Report #QualitativeResearch #Analysis #Academics
