I am pleased to share with you a recent publication from a collaboration with my colleagues in Nigeria, titled "Visual Portrayal of Monkeypox Outbreak on BBC: Is Western Media Biased Against Africa?". This paper, authored by Shodipe, O.A., Arowolo, O., Oloyede, PhD, I.B., Alade, M., Fadeyi, I.O., and Oko-Epelle, L., has been published in a Scopus indexed Global Knowledge, Memory and Communication journal by Emerald Publishing. This research critically examines the visual representation of the Monkeypox outbreak by the BBC, questioning whether there is an inherent bias in Western media's portrayal of Africa. The findings and discussions in this paper are pertinent to our field, especially in understanding media biases and their implications on global communication and perception. I believe this publication will be a valuable addition to our academic discourse and I encourage you to read and disseminate it within your networks. This Week in Palestine - July 2024 Heroes from Gaza Concept Note This Week in Palestine is an English-language monthly print and online magazine with a self-imposed mandate to promote and document Palestine. The first issue of the magazine was published in December 1998, and the periodical has not missed a single issue since. Turbo Design, the company that publishes This Week in Palestine (TWiP), operates from the city of Ramallah in Palestine. _________________________________________ Surely, you’ve seen the video of the young man sitting upright on the stretcher after being pulled out from the rubble, cheering and raising both his hands, signaling defiance, victory, and pride. Or the lady doctor who ran under the Israeli bullets to save a patient. This is not to mention the huge number of doctors and medical staff working ceaselessly and in incredibly dangerous and in precarious circumstances to save lives. There are so many walking angels in Gaza that humanity should be proud of. “Heroes from Gaza” is the theme of the July 2024 issue of This Week in Palestine. After acknowledging some individuals and institutions who have stood up for Palestine (in the May 2024 issue of the magazine,) we would like this time to highlight as many individuals who have essentially risked their lives to save others or at least delivered a human message that has rendered them heroes. Admittedly, far from being comprehensive, our list of heroes will include high-profile individuals, common folk, journalists, cooks, poets, women, and children, all of whose actions humble us and serve as a lesson to humankind. We usually prefer to feature people who are alive – under the circumstances, we will honor those who were martyred.
