I like the concept behind the saying ‘a stranger is a friend you just haven’t met yet’. Sometimes in aged care, routines and task focus can dominate the interactions. There are older people that live alone even among a crowd; and not everyone feels confident to strike up a conversation. Today is International Day of Friendship, it’s about creating environments and spaces that encourage conversation. Finding something new about an existing acquaintance, being open and curious, by using a compassionate lens. Go on…meet the friend in the person sitting next to you at your next meeting, who you are seated next to on the airplane, find time to see friends you haven’t connected with in a while. Shout out to Friends for Good in the work they do connecting people in innovative ways, and Ending Loneliness Together advocates and researchers tackling this challenge. What are the ways you’ve encouraged good conversations in residential aged care? (that don’t cost anything) … seating nooks? …TED talks, photo shoots or photo boards? New garden🪴ideas for spring? Creating meaning, purpose and connection might sound ambitious…it’s in the little things - kindness, compassion, and seeing a friend in a stranger.

The NZ premiere of Moana 2 Reo Māori and Moana 2 on the same day is evidence that “mana ōrite” is possible if we are all in it together. No one lost out here because the Reo Māori version was produced and released at the same time as the English version. However, Māori kids would have definitely missed out were they made to wait several years later for the Reo Māori version to be released. There are many examples where tamariki ako ki te reo Māori are made to wait for resources to be made and released for them long after resources are provided in English. We will never achieve equality while inequity prevails. Next steps: Everyone in every space can make a difference by addressing inequities in your own backyard.
