We are thankful to Tsungai Muvingi for her latest piece as part of our community writers project. The Ripple Effect: How Peace in Families Creates Peace in Communities, explores the profound connection between peace at home and peace in the wider world. Tsungai’s piece casts a light onto a vital but often overlooked aspect of peace: the role of families. As she emphasizes, it’s easy to focus on global issues, yet peace begins at home, with individuals and families. Peaceful family environments create a ripple effect, promoting values like empathy, communication, and respect—values that extend far beyond our front doors. In a multicultural place like Manitoba, these principles resonate strongly. Families that practice acceptance, kindness, and understanding help foster more inclusive and unified communities. By nurturing peace within our homes, we contribute to a more vibrant and resilient society, one that mirrors Canada’s values of diversity, inclusion, and mutual respect. Tsungai leaves us some thought provoking questions at the end of her story, and we welcome you to reflect on them, and/or to share your thoughts and reflections with us. https://lnkd.in/eXawVarx #FamilyPeace #CommunityBuilding #RippleEffect #Inclusion #CanadianValues #BuildingBridges #PeaceBuilding

Today marks Canada’s National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This day serves as a solemn reminder to honour the children who never returned home, the survivors of residential schools, and their families. But reconciliation isn’t a one-day event—it’s an ongoing journey that we must all commit to, in order to foster healing and justice for Indigenous communities. Here are meaningful ways to keep the message of truth and reconciliation alive every day: - Listen to Indigenous voices: Seek out Indigenous authors, artists, and storytellers. Their lived experiences are key to understanding the ongoing impacts of colonization. - Support Indigenous organizations: Contribute to groups working to preserve Indigenous cultures, languages, and rights. - Educate yourself and others: Engage with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action and find ways to implement them in your community, workplace, or school. - Reflect and engage: Attend local events, workshops, and panels to deepen your knowledge and understanding of Indigenous histories and issues. This day is a call to action, and each step we take brings us closer to a future built on respect, understanding, and equity. #TruthAndReconciliation #ndtr #EveryChildMatters #IndigenousRights

I like the concept behind the saying ‘a stranger is a friend you just haven’t met yet’. Sometimes in aged care, routines and task focus can dominate the interactions. There are older people that live alone even among a crowd; and not everyone feels confident to strike up a conversation. Today is International Day of Friendship, it’s about creating environments and spaces that encourage conversation. Finding something new about an existing acquaintance, being open and curious, by using a compassionate lens. Go on…meet the friend in the person sitting next to you at your next meeting, who you are seated next to on the airplane, find time to see friends you haven’t connected with in a while. Shout out to Friends for Good in the work they do connecting people in innovative ways, and Ending Loneliness Together advocates and researchers tackling this challenge. What are the ways you’ve encouraged good conversations in residential aged care? (that don’t cost anything) … seating nooks? …TED talks, photo shoots or photo boards? New garden🪴ideas for spring? Creating meaning, purpose and connection might sound ambitious…it’s in the little things - kindness, compassion, and seeing a friend in a stranger.
The International Day of Friendship was proclaimed in 2011 by the UN General Assembly with the idea that friendship between peoples, countries, cultures and individuals can inspire peace efforts and build bridges between communities. The resolution places emphasis on involving young people, as future leaders, in community activities that include different cultures and promote international understanding and respect for diversity. (https://lnkd.in/ddngwQ4) Meaningful Ageing Australia supports this day, as we advocate for the expansion of friendships and meaningful connection with the older people in our communities.

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation falls on September 30, also known as Orange Shirt Day. As an immigrant from Australia living in Canada, I recognize that my own journey and experiences intersect with the broader narrative of truth and reconciliation. Just as Australia is grappling with its own history of colonization and the impact on Indigenous communities, Canada is on a similar path of acknowledging past injustices and working toward healing. National Day for Truth and Reconciliation serves as a powerful reminder for all of us—regardless of our backgrounds—to reflect on the histories and stories of Indigenous peoples in Canada. It’s an opportunity for me to learn, listen, and understand the significance of this day, while also considering how my own experiences shape my perspective. Reconciliation isn’t just about addressing historical wrongs; it’s about creating equitable outcomes for all. It requires transparent dialogue, diverse representation in decision-making, and collaboration with those affected by systemic inequalities. As a manager, I encourage all members of my team to dedicate time this September and beyond to deepen our learning journeys. This includes self-directed learning, group discussions, and engaging in events organized within our ministries. Together we can drive meaningful change and pave the way for a more inclusive public sector. What steps will you take to foster change and conversation? #TruthAndReconciliation #OntarioPublicService #CommunityEngagement #EquityAndJustice
