Work and identity have always been closely intertwined for me. I’m lucky enough to do what I love, so work doesn’t feel like a separate part of my life—it’s integrated into who I am. Whether I’m listening to podcasts about human behavior, leadership, or the future of work while out walking or connecting with friends I’ve made through my career, work is a core part of my identity. Great article on the strength of “friendship” at work and how it impacts the team, results etc. While “player talent” can not be overlooked the NY Knicks success this season is clearly at a higher level due to the closeness and comradery of the team much of which stems from prior relationships. I would use a different word though than “friends” that elevates teams and that’s “colleagues” or “comrades”. I reference another NY Times article written shortly after 9/11 talking about the New York City Firefighters and all they had to deal with on 9/11 and all the resulting aftermath. That article’s main point was that the Fire Departmet of New York (FDNY) fellow employees in the firehouse are different than our friends as friends can and often disappointment us where as your firefighting “colleague” operates at a different level - they can not and will not disappoint you as your life is on the line with each other when you are fighting a fire. That bond of helping out your fellow worker and not letting them fail - being there for them during a crisis is not an easy task with or without the heat of a burning flame. That bond and relationship is very different than being “friendly” or the light “transactional” relationships at work we sometimes call friends. I’ve seen this in my own career and thankful to all of my “colleagues” who have been there for me fighting our business fires. Having worked for over 20 years, I vividly recall the challenges of starting my career at 20. One of my initial bosses was toxic, a term unfamiliar to me then. Reflecting on that experience, I pondered if I'd wish their child the same fate (who must be 20 now). Revenge is delicious on a TV show but not in real life. Empathy is pivotal in today's workplace, and toxicity has no place.
