When foster care ends, 18-year-olds still need support The "financial umbilical cord" between American parents and children is getting longer. Fifty-seven percent of people ages 18 to 24 live with a parent - as do 21 percent of 25-to-29-year-olds. And 31 percent of young adults rely "a great deal" or "a fair amount" on their parents for emotional support. For many American kids, the gradual glide path to adulthood comes with an ample parental safety net. But there's one group of young people who enter adulthood much more abruptly, and with much less support: the roughly 20,000 teenagers who, in bureaucratic euphemism, "graduate" from foster care each year. https://lnkd.in/e86kbtjt In 2014 Staying Put was introduced after a long campaign led by the Fostering Network, it was hoped that this change in the law would assist and facilitate children to stay with their fostering families. However, there are still logistical and financial obstacles to staying put that have long needed addressing and campaigns continue …FosterWiki 👉Every very child deserves security and a sense of belonging, especially those who can't return home safely and spend their childhood with their fostering family 👉Fact - leaving the care system at a young age can be brutal. Too often, we see young adults facing limited support and inadequate housing arrangements that merely fulfill checkboxes. 👉It's a deeply troubling reality that needs urgent attention! 👉Let's work together to ensure that every child leaving foster care finds the security and support they deserve -to thrive in adulthood. 🤔 👉Reassessing the "Staying Put" policy, means more carers can continue supporting the aspirations of young adults leaving care. This is essential for their success as they transition into adulthood. #FosterCarerChallenges #FosterCare #OngoingSupport #Belonging #Security #AddressTheChallenges #StayingPutCampaign #CareLeaver #Transitioning #FosterWiki #VoicesOfFosterCarers #TheFosteringNetwork👇

Empty nest syndrome refers to the feelings of sadness, loneliness, or loss that parents may experience when their children leave home for the first time, typically to pursue higher education, work, or start their own families. Becoming a foster carer is a transformative journey that offers countless rewards, not only for the children in need but also for the individuals who open their hearts and homes to them. https://lnkd.in/ec6MiJVT #sunbeamfostering #happiness #fostercarer #fostercarers #fostercarerneeded #foster #fostertalk #foster #fostercare #fosterlove #fostering #fosterparents #fosterfamily #children #makethemsmile #newpost #london #greaterlondon #fosterlondon #children #sunbeam #fostering #CouldYouFoster #pridefostering #enhancedfostering

This foster carer’s statement raises valid points. And they are right to express frustration about the disparity between the financial support provided to foster families and the expectations placed on them by children’s services 👇 “These children, as we are told numerous times, are not ours, yet we are expected to supplement the financial responsibilities of children's services to ensure that those children receive the care laid out in government regulations. The government need to fully accept responsibility for their children and cover the cost of raising their children. There has been a drastic reduction in what we can purchase for the allowances we receive but no reduction in the expectation from children's services.” Foster carer Read ‘The Impact of the Cost-of-Living Crisis on Foster Carers: 2022 Survey Results #FosterWiki As of 2024, the challenges remain, with financial pressures affecting foster carers ability to support children adequately. https://lnkd.in/em2QuG_f #FosterCare #FosterWiki #CostOfLivingCrisis #SupportFosterFamilies

Foster care is a lifeline for thousands of vulnerable children 🏡 For those unfamiliar, foster care involves lovely families opening up their hearts and homes to take care of children who cannot live safely with their birth families. These children often come from backgrounds of severe adversity as victims of emotional, physical and sexual abuse, as well as neglect. Foster families serve as a crucial lifeline, offering a stable and supportive environment during what are the most challenging periods of these children's lives. They play an invaluable role in providing a safe haven and nurturing atmosphere when it's needed most ❤️ 🚨 But here's the hard truth: our foster care system is at breaking point 🚨: • 100,000+ children in care – the highest on record • £23B/year cost of adverse outcomes • 40% increase in social workers leaving the profession • Shortage of 6,500 foster families, with 13% deregistering every year • Alarming long-term outcomes for children who have left care, for example: – 41% of 19-21 year olds not in education, employment, or training – 52% of foster children have criminal convictions by age 24 – 1 in 3 young people become homeless with in 2 years of leaving care These aren't just numbers. They're children. These are childhoods on the line 💔 So why am I sharing this? Because awareness is the first step toward change 🌱 Despite the challenges, I'm inspired daily by the dedication of social workers, the love of foster families, and the resilience of the children themselves 💎 At Starlight, our mission is clear: solve the child welfare crisis. We're not just another tech company or piece of software — we're problem solvers. Technology is simply our means to drive meaningful change and transform the lives of children and young people in the foster care system ✨ Together, we will build a better tomorrow — change is on the way 🚀 #FosterCare #SocialImpact #TechForGood #ChildWelfare
