Ecosystem services of mangroves - visited Florida ________________________________________________________ Mangroves in Florida are more than just important for the local ecology; they are a vital line of defense against the damaging effects of hurricanes. By reducing storm surges, preventing coastal erosion, and supporting ecosystem recovery, they provide invaluable services to both the environment and human populations. Protecting and restoring mangrove ecosystems is crucial for the long-term resilience of Florida’s coastal regions in the face of increasing hurricane activity.

🛰️ The New South Wales Government has invested in a near-daily 3.5-metre resolution satellite data covering the entire state. This has provided a unique opportunity for government agencies to gain access to this satellite imagery. Planet imagery can power decision-making across a range of use cases, including: - Bushfire Management - Drought Response and Watter Planning - Flood-Impacts and Assessment - Construction and Urban Planning - Vegetation and Biodiversity 👉Read more here: https://bit.ly/3PWQMEt

Good day all; Today is world mangrove day. Mangroves protect shorelines from damaging storm and hurricane winds, waves, and floods. Mangroves also help prevent erosion by stabilizing sediments with their tangled root systems. They maintain water quality and clarity, filtering pollutants and trapping sediments originating from land. Mangroves provide important nesting and breeding sites for fish and shellfish, migratory birds and sea turtles. This underscores their importance to coastal fishing communities. According to a global research, an estimated 80% of the global fish catch relies on mangrove forests either directly or indirectly. Let's all protect and use water sparingly and wisely and manage our waste as this is the lifeblood of key ecosystems like mangroves that provide key ecosystem services to use as humans and for wildlife which rely heavily on them for survival. #WorldMangroveDay #mangroves

The study reveals a significant decline (<10%) in green vegetation quality due to prolonged autumn and winter dryness, indicating high drought sensitivity in the region. The approach is suitable for semi-arid environments due to its geospatial implications for vegetation monitoring and evaluation. https://lnkd.in/dDS6P2p4

What is FIRO? Forecast Informed Reservoir Operations (FIRO) is a smart way to manage water by using better weather forecasts and monitoring. It focuses on atmospheric rivers, which are responsible for nearly half of all water supply and over 95% of all flood damages in California. Right now, FIRO is being tested at Seven Oaks Dam to boost groundwater recharge, support wildlife habitats, and keep flood risks in check. The study will look at how planned water releases and tweaks to the river channels could help restore habitats for endangered species. #FIRO

Woodborer Trapping Program in the Kootenay Boundary Region "In recent years woodborers have caused significant tree mortality, mainly to mature Douglas-fir trees but on occasion lodgepole and ponderosa pine, and western larch, in association with wildfires and drought effected stands. Woodborer populations are currently at elevated levels following large scale fires and bark beetle infestations and are now taking advantage of these opportunities and are attacking and killing stressed trees. To determine the species responsible and flight times we are conducting a large-scale trapping program throughout southern BC. Specifically, in the Kootenay Boundary Region, trapping will occur throughout the Rocky Mountain District from Bisco south to the US Border near Grassmere. Woodborer traps will be assembled, set up, collected bi-weekly, and trap contents sorted and counted, with sample insects pinned for future reference."
