On March 12, 2024, the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources held a hearing to discuss findings and recommendations for the Wildland and Fire Mitigation and Management Commission. This hearing provided members of Congress and witnesses the opportunity to discuss new and potential policies to address the nation’s wildfire crisis. TCIA has had a growing interest in wildfire-mitigation and -management strategies, and used the hearing as an opportunity to submit a letter for the record to provide its thoughts on ways Congress can improve vegetation management as it relates to wildfires. Ecosystem services of mangroves - visited Florida ________________________________________________________ Mangroves in Florida are more than just important for the local ecology; they are a vital line of defense against the damaging effects of hurricanes. By reducing storm surges, preventing coastal erosion, and supporting ecosystem recovery, they provide invaluable services to both the environment and human populations. Protecting and restoring mangrove ecosystems is crucial for the long-term resilience of Florida’s coastal regions in the face of increasing hurricane activity.

🚨 New Publication 🚨 Excited to share that my paper, “Changing large wildfire dynamics in the wildland–urban interface of the eastern United States,” has been published in the International Journal of Wildland Fire 🔥 I couldn't have done it without my amazing coauthors, Dr. Victoria Donovan, Dr. Carissa Wonkka, and Michaella Ivey. This study examines increasing large wildfires in the eastern US and their impact on the wildland-urban interface (WUI). Key findings include: • WUI wildfires account for 45% of large fires and 55% of the area burned. • WUI wildfires are, on average, 46% larger than non-WUI wildfires. • Most increases in large wildfire are happening outside the WUI. Have you experienced a wildfire in NZ's native forests? As part of the Extreme Wildfire programme we're evaluating wildfire risk and flammability of Kauri, podocarp and beech forests. We're looking to capture people's experiences with wildfires in native forests through this 10-minute questionnaire. We want to hear from present and past fire and land managers and firefighters but also hapū, forest, farm and other land owners. https://lnkd.in/ghRDaHvN #wildfire #survey #questionnaire #research #forests
