Earlier this month, Professor Rebecca Bratspies delivered the Annual Lloyd K. Garrison Lecture on Environmental Law at the Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University on "Mapping Injustice: Race, Place, and Environment in New York City." Professor Rebecca Bratspies currently serves as a Visiting Professor of Environmental Law and Haub Visiting Scholar at Haub Law. She is also a Professor at CUNY School of Law, where she is the founding director of the Center for Urban Environmental Reform. Professor Bratspies focused her lecture on Environmental Justice, which she describes as having at least two rough components: “fair treatment, a substantive outcome” and “meaningful involvement,” which can be described as a procedural component. She used these components throughout her lecture to discuss the “highly racialized inequality” that exists today, how we got here, and what we can do about it. Her fascinating presentation chronicled the history of New York, starting with the 1890’s, and the evolution of housing in New York from single-family to tenement style buildings and the progression of events and laws and agencies. The Lloyd K. Garrison Lecture on Environmental Law was established in memory of Lloyd K. Garrison in 1995. The amazing first week of my two-week lecture series hosted by Central Asian University of Environmental and Climate Change Studies - Green University in Tashkent, Uzbekistan is in the books. I delivered four lectures to engaged audiences of professors, students, and professionals from many disciplines at Green University on "Introduction to International Law, "Obstacles and Limitations in International Environmental Law," "Stratospheric Ozone Depletion Governance as a Success Story in International Environmental Law," and "Antarctica and the Arctic as 'Polar Opposites' in International Environmental Law Governance." Last night, I delivered a public lecture on "Introduction to Climate Change Governance" to a capacity crowd of in-person and online attendees in a downtown venue away from Green University, which attracted a diverse and interdisciplinary audience that I hadn't yet encountered in this visit ranging from high school students and students from several universities to senior officials in the Ministry of Ecology and seasoned practitioners in many fields. The audience was highly attentive and engaged in a stimulating Q&A session. I met several students who expressed interest in pursuing an LL.M. in Environmental Law at The George Washington University Law School. After the lecture, I was interviewed by UzReport World, a major media outlet in Uzbekistan. I was delighted to have that opportunity to say a few words to a broad audience beyond Tashkent. I am even more grateful that they have scheduled a second interview with me (for 30 minutes) on Monday. Sometimes the simplest questions are the most difficult to answer, but I welcome the challenge. Suffice it to say that I struggled a bit to respond (in two minutes or less) to the question, "How can the law address climate change?" Give it a try yourself and prepare your version of "The elevator speech to save the planet." It might come in handy for all of us to have in our back pockets as we seek to secure a sustainable future.

Panel Three of the Shapiro Environmental Law Symposium at The George Washington University Law School on March 28 will address strategic litigation to promote human rights and environmental protection. A recent wave of strategic climate litigation filed by youth plaintiffs around the world has provided a source of progress and hope in the fight for climate justice. This esteemed panel will address strategies pursued and victories secured by youth and other plaintiffs in Europe (Prof. Amelia Burnette), the United States (Prof. Paul Rink of the Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University), and Latin America (Samantha Derksen of Hausfeld). It will also address a recent landmark victory in securing environmental justice for Indigenous peoples in Guatemala (Leonardo A. Crippa of the Indian Law Resource Center).
